I was just thinking about something and thought I'd ask you all - at what point do you differentiate between canon and cliché? For example, Edward liking Bella in blue is canon, but people tend to think of it as being a fic cliché too.

I think I've read so many fics that I don't remember if its OF cannon or fanfic cannon.
I think that  they turned cannon into cliches. Bella biting her lip. Alice doing a makeover on Bella.
Edward leaving Bella for her own good.

Well, it was for this book: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login which I thought I'd give a go because it seemed mindless and had decent reviews. I held off from flouncing multiple times, hoping there'd be a miracle turnaround (aka the whole story would change) but alas, it wasn't to be. After creating a 'Can I just flounce life' shelf just for that book, I left this review:

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

I don't think I'm as critical about canon/cliche issues.  I expect lip biting, looks good in blue, certain quotes or references to the books, etc., just as much as I expect Bella and Edward to be together at the end.  Would it be fanfic without those things?  And yes, I am a Edward and Bella belong together girl, although I can mix it up with a Bella/Jasper or Bella/Carlisle story every once in a while.  Bella and Emmett together is just wrong.  We all have our quirks.  :NeenerNeener:

I dont mind the cannon/cliché most of the time. The only one that bothers me is the Alice character, I think it taken to the extreme a lot. Or it could be just because it bothers me.  :o

Not sure about this. I think the term "Bella Barbie" is definitely cliche because it's not in the original.  Whereas Alice stating "It's time" is canon.

So if it is actually in the book, it's canon. If it plays off canon, it's cliche?

I don't mind the Canon parts when it is really in the books. I like that some things like Looks and main character traits stay the same, otherwise you could write an original Story.
There are several writers out there that wrote original fiction and got "not enough Reviews" and then just Change the names to make it a Twilight fanfic... I'm not sure what to think of that and it's not the Point.

Edward liking Bella in blue is something that is not that important. I think in reality he would have liked her in any bold Color. She was so shy and used to be in the Background, I think she never wore attractive clothes or eye catching Colors, a nice red could have had the same effect.

Alice..., she would never be my best friend and thats why I'm always happy when she is not the fashionista in a fic. But I think I remember that in the books she only dressed Bella for Special occassions, right? In fics it is often too much...

I'm on the Family Computer and it changes randomly the first letters to capital ones... don't hold that against me! ^-^

For me it's when I feel they just put it there for the heck of it, like the story could do without it but the author for some reason think because we like Twilight we wanna read over and over about how Edward likes Bella in blue and her chocolate eyes and about how clumsy it is. But what really gets me it's when Bella is just so plain and Edward is just so dreamy that he would never be interested in her, and I get that in some HS fics it makes sense I hate it when Bella is 20 30-ish and having these thoughts. :pulling

Another thing to add to my growing pile of complaints, something that for sure makes me flounce is when Bella is a 'Independent strong woman' with a good job and she happens to meet Edward who is a complete ass and she drenches her panties :banghead:

Does that actually happen to women or have I yet to meet a man who does that to me? :D

Okay, the Edward making Bella drench her panties is not cliché from the book, but it's it is on ff.

I think that is all. :relieved:

I think that's something we talked about here several times. When writers use the characters for a college fic or make them even older, give them Jobs etc, it is very annoying when they don't let them Age in character. Anybody out there really believing that Canon Bella would still be a virgin with 27? I can believe that she blended into the Background during highschool but in college? No way she wouldn't start getting more outgoing, developing friendships, dating (!). When she is still a virgin after college, there should be a good reason, not "nobody noticed me before" what was her reason in the books. So, she should be more experienced, not only sexual but also with People alltogether. So, no more Bella Barbie, an older Bella should know what clothes she is comfortable with and stick to it! Nothing is wrong with experimenting but after some time you develop an individual style and Alice would get her shoes burnt if she tried to Change that completely just because she thinks it's not good.

An older Bella won't drive that old car and even her dad wouldn't want it. So, give that poor Girl something good to drive after her first paycheck!

So, I don't expect and don't want completely Canon characters in fanfiction stories. Let's face it, making them all human changes Canon already so writers should think about what is changed then. A human Jasper can't be an Empath, a human Alice shouldn't get visions, Edward can't read minds...

If you'd try to write a human Twilight Edward would end with a restraining order very soon... ;) An older Bella wouldn't think his creeping into her bedroom and destroying her car to stop her from seeing her friends is a sign of love... (yeah, Edward is still my less likeable character from the books, creepy weak Boy)

And we wouldn't complain (too much) if you were not so good in bed.  But really? It looks plenty big.

So either she spends too much time with Booked's boyfriend, or she never got that close.   ;D

Don't think i will ever complain about being with Rob, good or not  ;)
I was about to say maybe he was too drunk to give her pleasure when they did it. well, if it was all an experiment/lies and to ask money for it, that really sucks. another reason why i sometimes feel bad for these celebrities. If it was just some random hook up, they will just forget the experience. But with $$$ and 15-minutes of fame involved, they get their intimate lives broadcasted to/dissected in public.  :(

Chris Pine, same guy who played him in the last film (first film of new series).

That guy is hot too! did you all see him in This Means War with Reese and Tom Hardy? Unstoppable with Denzel? He can act.

Trivia for the older gals here: if you remember that hit tv show CHiPs with Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox, their boss was Sarge, played by RObert Pine. he's the dad of Chris.  :) Come to think of it, he was a good looking, macho, older guy but balding a bit. hope that doesn't happen to Chris!

I don't really look at whether a fanfic is AU, Or canon or whatever. as long as the story is good, i will read it. :)
Am not much into vampires and werewolves so haven't read much fanfics with those in it.  :(

I just go through diff. phases (not fazes  ;D) so i tend to mix up the types of stories i read so i don't get too much in a fanfic slump. as mentioned, am in a plus size phase now and I am 90% done with Real Women Have Curves. I really really like it!
