I read one of the recs I hadn't heard of on the top ten lists posted recently.

Twice as Long as Yesterday by hopeful wager.  There were a lot of instances of mixing up the present with the past (the story was set in the 1800's)  It was okay, I can't say I really enjoyed it though.

I also read North of Need by Laura Kaye (book not fic) and have to say I absolutely loved it.

I was tempted to try this, but the god aspect put me off. If you liked it that much, I'll definitely give it a try.

Right now I'm reading Divergent by Veronica Roth. Really loving it so far, though it's quite bumpy!

Is anyone else still reading You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login? She updated today after a multiple month break, so I re-read the existing chapters. I was actually disappointed - from what I remember, I loved this fic when I first read it. The second time around, it seems pretty average.

Has anyone else found a fic that they previously loved, which was nowhere near as good when re-reading?

Ok ladies....I have a favor?

I'm kinda wanting to read a canon fic (*gasp*) but it's been so long since I've read one and I have SO MANY E/B fics that I've still been collecting that I don't know where to start.

Soo...I was hoping for some recs?

I want AH, angsty and gritty. Not really wanting a pays-for-sex, nerdward, fluff (def'y no fluff).

Anyone read anything like this lately? One that was written well, has a good plot and just hooks you?

I thought Divergent and Insurgent were great. I'm going to read them both again closer to October when the third book comes out.

Thank you for the suggestions! I read both Pocket Change and Paper Cutouts (both were very good in my opinion) but Cracks in the Pavement is a new one, and it's going on my list. Thank you again  :-*

I liked North of Need a lot, and the other books I've read of hers. Hearts in Darkness was awesome!

Loved Divergent/Insurgent and can't wait for the 3rd book to come out in the fall!   I thought these were better than the Hunger Games even.

I'm still learning all the terminology, but when you say "canon" you mean where they are all vamps and the same couples as the books, right?  If so, my first fanfic was recommended here and it is canon.  Out of Sight, Out of Mind by Simaril.  I thought it was really good.    I can't remember exactly where it picks up, but the Cullens stumble upon Bella (I think maybe a while after Edward left in New Moon) in a different town and she doesn't remember any of them...  You'll have to read the story to figure out why. :)   Not sure if it counts as fluff or not.   Guess that's a matter of opinion.

I think that you're right and , technically, ‘Canon‘ include both s. Meyers vamp world and Canon couples.... I just always use the term Canon when referring to the couples instead of vamps vs AH

And thank you for the rec :) I remember starting this one and flouncing it for some reason....it could have been after I got started on non Canon vamps and hard a hard time w vampward. I do remember that quite a few around here really liked it though so I may have to give it another shot

 Thank you again   :-*

Personally, the problem I had with TPW was not the violence or darkness of it, but the bad writing. I have read darker books and stories, and they gave me the creeps and chills and made me cringe and cry. I am sorry to say that all this story did for me was make me laugh. It seemed forced, like the author kept creating more gruesome scenes chapter by chapter just to keep us interested. Does anyone undersatnd what I am talking about?

I read this such a long time ago - it was quite early on in my ff addiction, I don't think I'd ever read anything like this before (the abuse, the sex, etc) and I think it was probably car-wreck-reading for me - I wanted to look away, but just couldn't.

Also, I always want horrible Edwards to be redeemed. So many women pick a guy that is a total wanker, and put up with all sorts of crap because they want to be the one that changes him. I don't do that in real life - but I do like reading about it!  ^-^

I have a new-found love for WIPs (that get regurarly updated, like this one :P), because lately I tend to get bored with long completed stories. So I prefer reading something bit by bit as it comes out.

I would love to read WIPs - if there was an iron-clad guarantee that they would be finished. I have too many that I have started and loved, only for them to be abandoned with no explanation!

Whatever happened to 22Blue, BriannaMarley, m81170 . . .?

I other news, I actually tried a Bloody Mary last night. It was ok, but not my kind of drink. It isn't the kind of thing I would want on a Friday night out with friends.

Nope - a Bloody Mary is breakfast food!

That makes me sound like a raging alco! I'm not really  ;)

Next time you have a late breakfast/brunch, try a Bloody Mary - then, you'll see what I mean. Sometimes, I'll even do a Virgin Mary - can't stand tomato juice on its own, but with all the seasonings and lots of ice - yum!

And don't forget a good squeeze of lime - quite a lot of recipes forget that, but it really makes a difference.

*adds tomato juice to shopping list*

Do you (or anyone else who reads similar stuff)have any more recs like Divergent/Insurgent, stuff similar to Hunger Games? I'm trying to line my daughter up some stuff for summer. She's not a huge fan of romance, but she loved Hunger Games, Cinder and Scarlett by Marissa Meyer, and the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. She's 16, but with her disabilities, she reads a bit younger, so I'd like to keep it in the YA years.

Has anyone else found a fic that they previously loved, which was nowhere near as good when re-reading?

I fear that there would be too many to count! I don't usually re-read, but sometimes I'll start reading something, and then remember that I must have already read it (before I started keeping a list of read fics).

Also, and I know I talked about this before, reading a WIP is such a different experience to reading a finished fic. Think of it like a soap opera on TV. Pick one - Days of Our Lives, Eastenders, Neighbours. You might watch it everyday, or at least a few eps a week, but would you sit down and watch an entire season in one go? Probably not, or not without a lot of fast-forwarding.

I cringe now at some of the fics I read early on that, at the time, I really loved! I honestly thought that I had stumbled across the door to another world when I first discovered fanfiction - I really hadn't read a lot of girlporn before  ;).

Also, I thought that there would only be 20, maybe 30 fics out there!

Ahhh - the innocence of youth!  :D :D :D

Loved this: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login but can't re-read, although it still holds a place in my heart, and if the author ever finished the sequel . . . yep, I'd read it!

Has she read all the Percy Jackson books?  My daughter (now 19) really enjoyed those and remembers them fondly.  The Eragon books - the series is now complete.
She refuses to give up her Artemis Fowl books.  She also loves the Abhorsen Trilogy (Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen) by Garth Nix.  Tamora Pierce writes a lot of books with female protaganists.  That's all I've got for now.

BriannaMarley is back.....or at least she was in April!

Yep - but updating What You Least Expected - which she had already posted and pulled and is re-posting with edits, but not touching Master of My Heart - which is epically long and cliff-hanger-ish and was nearing the end!

She seems to vanish for months, and then re-emerges in spits and starts, both on ff.net and twitter. She has copped a lot of abusive reviews on ff.net, and I think these have derailed her writing.

Plot is really good, but issues with SPaG, especially flipping between past and present tense in the same paragraph/sentence - I even offered to pre-read, we exchanged email addresses and that was the last I heard.

I actually purchased this series of books for our school library this week: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Our older kids loved The Hunger Games. They also loved this series You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login- it's an Aussie series, but you might find it somewhere. It's also been made into a TV series - that can help kids who have reading disabilities or are reluctant readers, which is one of the reasons The Hunger Games has been such a hit in our library.

Oh, yes.  Usually WIPs.  I find some stories that are wonderful when read a chapter at a time are kind of awful when read all at once.

For example, I love drotuno's Broken Angel series, but she overdoes the lemons.  However, I could see that as a weekly thing? I'm sure it was the perfect amount. Though I liked it anyway.  So maybe it wasn't a great example. Emotional Warfare by CompleteRandomness is much better as a WIP than as a story.  There are a few more, but I'm blanking.  I think MoTU was a little better as a WIP than as a full story.

Though for me, it's usually the SPaG that kills it.  I can handle more SPaG in a WIP than reading it as a story.   :P

Here are a few to look into...   I'm awful at knowing what age range is appropriate though, but I think they are young adult mostly.

Wool Omnibus (sort of hunger games like, I thought it was good)
Eragon (I read these forever ago, fantasy book about dragons etc)
Bartimaeus Triology (really liked these, again, years ago)
Angelfall: Penryn & The End of Days (LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Everybody should read it!!)
Hush Hush (about Angels, great series)
City of Bones (another great series, very popular)
Trylle Trilogy (loved this one too, about trolls, but pretty trolls LOL)
Stardust by Neil Gaiman (so much better than the movie)
Significance by Shelly Crane
Ender's Game
The Golden Compass

I haven't read these next 3, but I see them recommended a LOT:
Matched
Delirium
Graceling
