Oining?

That's my new word-of-the-day!

I did have to google it - thank goodness for urban dictionary.

It's a localism??

Torturing kept coming up as a spelling error.

What did urban dictionary say?

Yes, but, as the saying goes, size doesn't matter - it's what they can do with it that counts - apparently!

Was it poisonous? - if not - I agree, you are a pussy.   :D

Quick- find a flip flop (thong) - a slipper will do.

Yes. Unfortunately Spidie prefers to be upstairs in the bedrooms, but we still leave him alone. Apart from the occasional relocation.

Ah yes, poisonous spiders, when I can find them always become acquainted with the bottom of a thong. Though they don't usually come inside (You don't want to get bitten by one of those in your sleep!), so you're more likely to get bitten on the bum when you go to the dunny. Redbacks especially are fond of the thunderbox, they often live under the seat. I tend to kill most of the poisonous spiders in the laundry or toilet.
We have black widows where I live and sometime brown recluses.  But a thong? Hell no! I put a boot or athletic shoe on before I go near them. Ugh! I hate spiders. Give me a snake or a lizard any day over one of those. *still shuddering*

I often think spiders are the only reason Australians wear thongs - if it weren't for spiders, we'd just go barefoot everywhere.

As much as I hate where I live sometimes - I love the fact I could walk around naked without the the fear of being eaten or bitten if I so desired.

I think red-backs are just black widows...with style.

The redback spider is a dangerous spider endemic to Australia. It is a member of the genus Latrodectus, the widow spiders, which are found throughout the world. The female is easily recognisable by her black body with a prominent red stripe on the upper side (i.e. the back) of her abdomen. Females have a body length of about a centimetre, while the male is smaller, being only 3 to 4 mm long. The redback spider is one of few arachnids which usually display sexual cannibalism while mating.

Redbacks are considered one of the most dangerous species of spiders in Australia. Its neurotoxic venom is toxic to humans, with bites causing severe pain, often for over 24 hours. An antivenom is commercially available, and since its introduction in 1956, no deaths due to redback bites have been reported.

Sexual cannibalism? There has GOT to be a fic about sexual cannibalism!  :D

Yes, ours are similar.

I think that is where the term "black widow" comes from - after sex or whatever spiders do to get pregnant, the female eats the male.  And not in a good way  :D :D :D :D :D

But I find the best way to keep the black widows out is to keep the other bugs out.  So we have a spray service come around every other month.  At my last house, they were everywhere. Yuk.

Ellachanted - where are you?

Astro's post said they were endemic to Australia.  Unless they jumped on a ship and started an extended family this is not true.

I'm such a bogan when it comes to shoes. I go barefoot wherever I can get away with it, including around the horses with all the snakes and spiders... I drive in barefeet, do the supermarket shopping, any other little errands. I've also been known to go supermarket shopping in my pyjamas...Typical bogan, however upper class I may be in other ways.

Comfort and laziness always wins...It's bitten me in the arse a few times though, I've been stepped on by more than one of my horses and I cut myself on rocks and glass a fair bit too, plus, you've never seen feet so black as when you go to the supermarket barefoot.

Redback spiders are endemic to Australia, however other members of their genus Latrodectus, which is the genus of widow spiders are found all over the world, so while it looks like a redback, it's not the same spider, just a member of the same genus which is a low level rank, just one above species. It's just like the big cats are all part of the same genus, yet they are different species.
