Well, he sure is a bit of alright! I don't really know how I picture Edward. I don't think it's one particular person, just someone I make up in my head! I always picture him as more of a bluey than Rob I do know that.

OK, I give what is a " bluey "?

Oh! whoops, lol, It's Aussie slang for a red-head, just like we call someone bald, curly...I tend to use a lot of slang (or so I've been told, you can thank my Uncle for it), so if you ever get confused, just ask and I'll explain what I mean, I don't even think about it when I type...

It's kinda nice to read, do you also call red-heads "gingers" ? I find that the slang is usually something really different than what we  translate
when we hear.

Yeah. We call them gingers, but ranga (as in orangutan) or bluey is more common along with 'Fanta pants'.

I love my slang, my Uncle uses a lot of rhyming slang so I whip that out too sometimes but with the exception of a couple of phrases (such as tin lid for kid, dead horse for tomato sauce, dog's eye for meat pie oh and smash and grab for cab - Okay, so I use a lot more than I realised...haha) I don't use that too much. It's because on forums I tend to type a lot more along the lines of how I'd speak.

Too funny, my parents did everything they could to make certain we never even used contractions - and most definitely we were not allowed to use slang.  Such a colorful way to communicate and really interesting how it changes from continent to continent, another advantage of the forums......lol

well, either way, I'm enjoying your slang.  I may have to try some out at home.  Hmmm....do you think my husband would like some dead horse on his spaghetti?   ???  Yeah, this will be fun  ;D >:D

I just thought about something - is tomato sauce to you the stuff that comes in a can (tin) that you make spaghetti with? Or is it the stuff we call ketchup that you put on your hot dogs & french fries (chips).  For some reason I'm thinking dead horse is ketchup- I have met some Aussies here in California and that term sounds familiar when I think about it ;)

Yeah, they're flying up the sides.

So, I just finished a Jasper/Bella fic called Rosalie's Baby by Mortissues You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Romantically you dream of who will save you from your agony, care enough to return for the one left behind. Truly I must be cursed . . . .

It was written primarily in Rosalie's POV, which I found very interesting.  I'm not sure I've ever read a Vamp fic that had much to do with her.  It's an alternate NM (which many of the J/B fics are <sigh>) so it's got a lot of Edward in it.  He's not a complete twat, but it does emphasize his unbending ways, virgin qualities and isn't overly flattering for you E lovers out there.  But, was interesting to none the less and had a very possessive Jasper *fans self* and a large dose of Peter and Char.  Lots of funny bits.  I've yet to read a Mortissues fic that I didn't love :)
You held out your hand, and I took it without stopping to make sense of what I was doing. For the first time in almost a century, I felt hope.

Thank you! I would haven never found this one on my own since it's just labeled as Bella. Very possessive Jasper along with Peter and Charlotte? I'm in! I'm actually disappointed when I read a J/B fic that doesn't include Peter/Char. I love those characters

I've been gone a day and the bats have moved in! Love all this talk of rhyming slang! Adam and Eve=believe, apple and pears=stairs, army and navy=gravy, bacon and eggs=legs..that's English cockney rhyming slang, which I'm not :NeenerNeener: a cockney that is but some of it passes over to the rest of us Londoners :57:

I'll jump in here - the time differences don't always allow for good flow in conversation.

Tomato Sauce in Aust is ketchup (but it's not quite as sweet, I think). Anyway, yes, it's what we would put on hot dogs, but we would most likely put it on a pie or sausage roll or on a sanga (sausage, or what the Brits might call a banga), especially a Sausage Sizzle – basically a bbq’d sausage on piece of bread. Almost every hardware store, school fete and community event holds a Sausage Sizzle. We have compulsory voting in Australia once we turn 18, and I’m sure that more people go to vote to get the Sausage Sizzle rather than to avoid the fine for not voting!

I love the different turns of phrase that we all use, and then when you throw accents in, you sometimes need a translator!

I think we understand more of the US terms because we see them on TV and in movies but even in Aust, we have different slang in different states. In Queensland, we put our "togs" in our "ports" - togs are swimming costumes (for both male and female, although we also call speedos "budgie smugglers") and ports are any sort of suitcase or a bag that a child might carry to school, like a backpack, etc). We don't use quite as much rhyming slang up here either - I've always thought of that as being more from down south (Victoria) where they are a bit more "English" than us Queenslanders.

A question: How do I insert a picture into a post? I thought a photo might better explain a pie with "dead horse" but once again, I am technologically challenged.

Hmmm - I can attach a pic but I can't embed a pic.
ETA - I did it - thanks Rdmickey! This is a sausage sizzle, not a pie. Equally as disgusting, but the magic of tomato sauce is that it makes everything taste good.

Has anyone else ever had this problem when downloading fics? (note, I use the FF downloader plug in for calibre)

I'll click a story, with the title and author's name. Download it, and calibre lists it with a name different than what's listed on the website where I got the fic. And then, I click the "view" button, and it opens the fic itself, and it's got ANOTHER name! So I've got books with 3 different author's names associated with them, and have no clue what to list it under!

For instance, on twiwrite is a story called "(Not Leaving) Without You" by forthelongestday. But in calibre it's listed as author InkCoveredQuill, and I open the fic, and there the author is listed as TittyKickers! WTF, what author name do I use? I know some authors use different names on different sites, but this is just too confusing!

(on an unrelated note, I am in J/B heaven, getting new fics left and right!)

ETA: I pulled some of the same fics with Flagg, and they all turned out just fine, so it seems to be a glitch in the fanfic downloader plug in for Calibre. *sigh* that means I'm going to have to redo the 20 or so fics I got today, and double check others. I haven't picked any up since I updated Calibre the other day, so hopefully, there aren't more goofed ones than the ones I got today.

Right on with that we call tomato sauce, but as it's rhyming slag, you could use it for whatever you call tomato sauce....

I think rhyming slang is more popular down south but there a also a lot people don't even realise originally came from rhyming slang as it's been shortened (as is the Aussie way with words).

Porkies (Pork pie) for lie is one of my favourites and Trouble and Strife for wife is another common one.

In Victoria we put our "bathers" or "cossies" on to go swimming. And being as Aussies don't pronounce their [r], anything ending in an er is more likely to be pronounced as ending in an [a] (as such bathers is pronounced bay-thas)

As for uploading a picture: if you're using quick reply you can't (Or at least I don't know how). Otherwise there should be an area under the box where you type with a button to add an attachment, you can upload photos using that.

A lot of these are used in Aus due to the fact our rhyming slag was once cockney...lol. It's hard to keep up cause it's always changing and I only know some of them, I've got a mate who just makes up heaps of them, he's brilliant at it, and while I mostly understand him when he gets smart none of them really stick.

Now to have a bit of a whinge: Usually I don't read WIPs but now I've got hooked on three(!!!) and it's bloody killing me waiting for updates!! It's driving me starkers!! Why oh why do I do this to myself? WHY?

I thought so, that Aus rhyming slang might come from the East End of London, makes sense. I don't know what to tell you hon, regarding WIP. I don't go near them, EVER! It does my crust of bread in!  :D

"She looked over rat me again" -The Ex-Factor. This story has tons of mistakes like that, it was fine at the start, but it's as if the longer the story goes on the less care is being taken...

I avoid WIPs like the plague...now. I used to follow a lot, but I'd get all the plots mixed up, and then quite a few were abandoned.

The only two that I follow are You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login They both were started in 2009!  :pulling

I read MOTU as a WIP. I know there are a lot of mixed opinions about MOTU/FSoG but as a WIP it was great -kind of like watching a tv series with just enough of a tease to look forward to the next episode. And the author was consistent in her updates.

There are a heap of well-rec'ed fics that are complete and on my TBR list. As soon as I finish what's on my e-reader, I'm starting on those. If anyone cares, now I'm up to the A-F's (A Fresh Start).

I just counted - 170 "A" titles left!!! I think it's time to change my plan.

Ahhh - whinging is different to whining. Two totally different words - in pronounciation and meaning - the g is not silent, we say "winj".

Whining is what a dog does - that pitiful whimpering sound.

Whinging is complaining about something, usually just a vent because you know that there is really nothing that can be done about it.

However, a lot of people whine when they whinge  :ecomcity:

That makes me need "wine"  :D especially if I start reading a WIP unknowingly!

Errr? We Brits use "whilst" til it's coming out our ear. "whinge" is a different term/word to "whine" it means the same ( moaning) but it's pronounced differently. whine=wine, whinge= weng. We tend to use both here....
