This one. I read the whole thing (it's incomplete, last updated in August) and it was just painful. Good story buried in there, but SO many errors that my brain hurts now. The plot moves at warp speed.(minor spoilers)
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
The author does the POV switching like in EP, but in such a way that she's constantly re-writing the same exact conversations, word for word, with a tiny bit of thought from each character. So it what's there could have been told in half the amount of words/chapters.
LOL! Should have been a clue when her first A/N says she flunked her driving text.  I didn't know you could text instead of take a test ;)

LOL I didn't even see that.

To try to be fair to the author, I did look at her profile to see if maybe English wasn't her first language. It says she's from Australia, so no help there. She just REALLY needs a beta reader.

If she's from Australia then her failing her driving test has nothing to do with her grammar skills because we don't do a written test, just hazard perception test and the driven test. Any idiot can pass their test as long as they can somewhat drive a car and they're 18 years old with 120 hours of driving practice under their belt.

But it doesn't surprise me. The way Australian education is going it's bloody scary. Maybe if we paid our teachers a bit more more smart people would actually want to impart their wisdom on our youth, rather than go to law school and actually earn a respectable living as a solicitor.

Unfortunately, I think that is all over.  Spelling and grammar are not taught enough here as well. :P

Why is it that virtually NO one who writes fanfic understands possessive tense? In just about EVERY fic I read it's always "The Cullen's". As in "the Cullen's were the nicest family. I couldn't wait until the Cullen's got back from hunting." It gets so old.

And this morning I read something where it talked about how much  "wait" the guy could carry!

There are definitely a lot of fanfics that need betas... The one i read and stuck to my mind as having the most no. Of errors was "Out of her league". BUT, i finished it and still enjoyed the story. If you are not too averse to reading several errors, then I rec you give this a try. Its an Actorward. good thing this is a humorous one so stopping once and a while for me to laugh out loud at the grammar and typos was part of the "fun". I think if this were to occur in a dark/drama/angsty one would really put me off. As a general rule, i don't mind the errors or grammar problems,  but I will once in a while b i t c h about it here. i don't have the heart to ever do it in a review bec I know how hard it is to write and want to respect the time and effort they made to put something out there. But for heaven's sake, pls get a decent BETA!!!!

I hauled myself up on to my "Principal/Teacher" soapbox to add my rant about the use of apostrophes, then read a few more posts and have calmed down a bit, and have realised that, so long as the plot is strong, I can overlook most grammar and punctuation errors. Poor spelling is a little harder to deal with, but overlooking basic proof reading drives me insane. When an author spells a word, then spells it incorrectly in the very next sentence... :pulling

I also hate it when the author misuses a common phrase or a word - I've mentioned "shutter/shudder" here before. I'm sure you've all got others.

Which reminds me, in No Ordinary Proposal I read " he bit his bottom" and the author forgot to write "lip"! That's so wrong!

Perhaps not. Perhaps he is just REALLY flexible.

And that's not always never a bad thing!  ;D

It says she's from Australia, so no help there. She just REALLY needs a beta reader.

Her a/n says she's from Tasmania. That explains a lot!

If you guys were Australian, you'd be thinking I was hilarious right about now!  :D :D :D

The driving laws are different in each state. Here in Queensland, we can get our learner's permit at 16 - after filling in an application form and passing a written test, and can upgrade to a provisional licence after logging 100hrs experience and passing a practical test. SPaG are not necessary, and you can even request someone to assist with reading, if necessary - although we tell our 11 and 12 year olds at school that they need to be able to read to get a job and a licence.  ;)

Unfortunately, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to get a licence - hence our tragic road toll every year.

Thank you! You should be Prime Minister! Although I'm not sure about lawyers being "respectable"!!!

Seriously, I had a final year trainee teacher (20 year old - third year of university) doing a practicum a few years ago - and she couldn't handle the Year 6 (10/11 year old) spelling list! I was going to flunk her but the university transferred her to another school! Six years later...she's a school PRINCIPAL! Sure, the school only has 9 kids, but WTF!!! It wouldn't surprise me if she were to call herself a "principle"! (I teach my kids that a principal is your PAL, but they still get it wrong.)

The problem is not all in the teaching - kids just don't see a purpose for SPaG. They text (I really "h8" that!!!) or type and get wiggly red lines that tell them when something is wrong.

I admit, my SPaG skills are declining due to computer usage. I sometimes go back and re-read a post and cringe about my typos. There are probably quite a few here! Lack of sleep also doesn't help.

You can get your learners in Vic at 16 too after passing a written multiple choice test, but you could probably still pass it if you were illiterate.

At least they have to drive with a fully licensed driver for at least 2 years...although sometimes I wonder if it's the blind leading the blind...

Victorian teachers are paid worst of all. Our bloody premier promised them a pay rise and then decided not to.

I'm a SPaG (I love that!) Nazi and I find it kind of sickening that an almost fully qualified teacher can't do the work she is going to be giving and teaching her students. It may come from being a linguist, but I've always been a stickler about it, possibly because I'm dyslexic and I've always had to work so hard on the spelling. I'm a bit OCD about it, it really annoys me and I really struggle with fics that have bad grammar and spelling, for me they stick out like sore thumbs and ruin the flow of the whole thing.

I'm one of those people that never uses text speak, even when I'm using my mobile...

Speaking of fics, I'm reading one now that I'm really enjoying. It's The Sound of Silence by Besotted
Bella Swan lives in a continuum between sound and silence, a world apart from what Edward Cullen knows. When their lives collide and their attraction can't be denied, can they overlook their differences and let love define them?
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Bella is deaf in this one and it's made for an interesting dynamic so far. I'm only about a third of the way through but so far no complaints on the SPaG front, and on top of that it's very eloquently written. All from EPOV (So far) and he doesn't sound like a teenage girl!

Another pet peeve of mind that kinda goes along with the whole grammar issue (though it's not technically a grammar mistake, it still drives me CRAZY):

When an author uses ! like they are going out of style. No one, not even the most expressive talkers, speak with that much excitement to warrant the overuse of these and I find it so distracting.

Here are a couple of examples of what I mean:

"Good morning Bella!"
"Jasper your still here!"
"Of course, you asked me to stay."
"Jasper I want to ask you one question before I forget. How long are you staying?
You told Jake you were just passing through!"
Jasper then walked over to me by the stairs and put his hand on my face.
- 12 -
"Bella I will be here as long as you want me here!"
I thought I was going to melt! Why is it that Jasper is here, well I know why but still! He was the ex husband to my ex best friend! He tried to eat me, teehee eat me how funny! I thought to myself! Thank god that he could not read my mind like his idiot brother!
"So Bella, I must say you are much stronger and more self aware! You haven't
even fallen down once since I have been here!"

and:

"Oooooooh!" Alice chirped in, "try me!! Maybe you can protect other's from my gift too!"
"And mine also!" Edward spoke up. "Perhaps Bella can protect from all vampire abilities!"
"That would be quite a skill Bella. Essentially you could protect your entire family from dangers and other forces!"
"That's a good point Rosalie!" Esme said.
"And then there was that whole 'I'm going to fly to Italy and almost die to save Edward' thing!"
Edward gave her a pointed stare.
"Well obviously I'm glad she did!" she continued, "I'm just saying that she was willing to die so that you could live! Even just a couple of months ago! She sliced open her damn arm when she was surrounded by three vampires -one of which has an uncontrollable lust for her blood- and she did it all so she could save you, Edward!"

Rosalie was starting to make sense, all I had ever wanted to do was protect them! And now I could! I could protect them against any vampiric force there was!
"I mean god, we should have seen it sooner! You're practically a walking martyr!" Rosalie finished up! "In a good way though!" she said, trying to compliment me.

 :wtf:

Annndddd....that was all I could take. And I got both of those excerpts from the first few pages of each fic. I flounced.

I think the mistake that annoys me most is 'defiantly' in place of definitely. It's so, so common in fics and it drives me crazy.

Sooo after watching BDPt2 and nearly having some kind of fit (I'd forgotten the intricacies of the book, so I was pretty much like :pulling toward the end) I now need some tea to calm me down and more fluff than a chinchilla.

Rec: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login Very cute, and a HS fic that doesn't include constant sexytime and pools of money.

I know, right?! That movie almost gave me a heart attack. Have watched it 3 times already and can't help loving it more after each time. :) Can't wait for the DVD to come out. Am sure it would have bonus features which i hope includes the dance number the cast did.

Hmmm, did Rob ever appear in SNL? I would like to watch that, if ever. Off to Google and YouTube before i finally call it a day....

Dang, he's been quoted as saying he's scared to host it... Was just spoofed by Bill hader last sept 22... Oh well, will continue to hope...

I love that you talk of SPaG & then call it a pay rise.  In the US, it is a raise.  Probably because you can't give it to yourself.   ;D

I do feel bad for you having dyslexia.  I joke that my fingers are dyslexic because they type in the wrong order all the time.  I'm constantly having to go back and correct.  But really, dyslexia is a problem in our schools.  I think there are a lot more children with it that aren't diagnosed until it is too hard for them to learn.  And probably a lot of them learn to deal with it.  But it could be causing a lot of these SPaG errors we complain about/make fun of.  :P

My Year 7 girls had that EXACT debate at school the day before BD2 was released!

They were Team Jacob.

I was Team Edward.

Obviously, Rob appeals to the more mature woman - but I nearly squealed "OMG" when I watched the clip from SNL!

My young nieces are all Team Jacob.  I figure it's an age appropriate thing.  Taylor is closer to their age. Rob is old. Well, for them.  Plus a lot of them remember him as Sharkboy.  He was so funny in that - though it was supposed to be a drama not a comedy  :D :D

Pay raise? Now that just sounds funky.

Dyslexia is a funny little thing. I think it's possibly under diagnosed here too, however we have pretty good testing. Although I tested out for getting special consideration for it due to the fact that other areas of my testing scored in the highest range. Apparently it doesn't matter if certain areas are 'below average' if you score the rest in the 'superior' range then they think you can just deal. I also have very bad working memory (short term) so it made for interesting studying practices.

Haha. Driving in Melbourne is a nightmare too. Overcrowded narrow roads, trams and hook turns make for interesting driving; all the Americans at Uni complain that our car parks and parking spaces are way to small. We drive on the left, so we get told to keep left (And look right when crossing the road), I wish people would heed that on the footpaths too, "keep left unless overtaking" is not only for the roads people!

It's going to be 40+ (104+) here today and it's not even summer yet, so I'm going to spend most of the day in the pool I think. I wish I had a waterproof kindle so I could lounge about on the lilo and stay cool, knowing me I'll just get sunburnt though...

Organising my downloaded fics. It's so much worse than I thought, I'm doing them alphabetically and it's turning into a horror show! I have around 2gb of fics, and when you consider they're usually <2/3mb each.. eek. It's going to be a long evening. However, after this I will have my own little library of fanfiction  >:D

2 gbs? That's all?  Sigh, I wish it were that easy.  I'm moving the organizing to Calibre now that I've discovered all these nice things about it.

Only I started to organize on my one computer and then worked on my laptop.  Now it's all a mess.  I swore I got all these stories in here already.   :33: :pulling:

Though I have to say, importing epubs? Yeah, so great.  The fanficdownloader app will find the URL in the epub & then I can grab the metadata which includes the summary.  And actually, the mobis I had just required me to change them to epubs first.  But still, it is a lot of work. :o

I really do need to work on these hoarder tendencies......

 ;)

Ouch, mine is luckily nowhere near that complicated - just changing all to PDF, organising into alphabetized folders and then importing into Calibre. How many fics do you have, crazy lady? I have around 9000, so I can't imagine how many you have  :o I'll see you on one of those documentaries about people who fill their house with everything they've ever owned if you're not careful ;).
I'm just thankful everything is on my laptop and not taking up actual physical space in my house, I don't even want to think about that.
