Hi All,

This if the first time I'm posting on this thread. I was organizing my files and starting reading a fic and only got to the fourth chapter and found I couldn't continue. That has never happened to me before. The author used past and present tense throughout which made me crazy. I was really interested in the story line - Edward is a doctor and Bella is a nurse with weight problem. He befriends her and then eventually they fall in love, etc. More than the grammatical issues is the unrealistic way that the supporting characters verbally abuse Bella regarding her weight. Every "encounter" Bella is ridiculed to the extreme about her weight. It felt like I was reading dialogue of school-age kids and not people in their 30's. What surprised me the most is the number of positive reviews this story has. Have any of you flounced on a story because of these issues?

I've flounced lots of stories for lots of different reasons, but immature writing is probably the highest on the list. I've also flounced because of unbelievable characters or plot, lack of interest (on my part), really poor grammar or spelling, etc.

I used to put a lot of stock in reviews, but not anymore. There are fics I love that don't have many, and lots of fics that I've flounced that have thousands. We all have different tastes, after all.

But seriously, that's the first fic you've ever flounced? I'm impressed!

I used to put a lot of stock in reviews, but not anymore. There are fics I love that don't have many, and lots of fics that I've flounced that have thousands. We all have different tastes, after all.

But seriously, that's the first fic you've ever flounced? I'm impressed!

I agree with your comment regarding review count. I found it interesting when I checked out a few other stories by the same author and didn't find the grammar to be as much of an issue. Maybe this fic is un-beta'd. Plus the fic I read before that was The Diva Diaries and the writing and story line for that fic is so compelling as was the character development. Maybe my mind was finding it harder to get into this fic after reading The Diva Diaries.

I still appreciate the effort that an author puts forth with his/her writing. I try to focus on the positive aspects but maybe with such limited reading time I'm starting to recognize whether I want to put time into a story if it is difficult to read. Thanks for your feedback!

I am reading this fic because of the help B gets with her serious self esteem issues. Bullying is quite rampant in society, and even though these are medical professionals, if one does it, others do it to fit in. Plus there are family issues also.

I loved other stories like this, and keep reading to see where it will go. I hope to see a strong Bella at the end who stands up to those who have bullied her.

I am very forgiving of some of the grammatical errors. But I get why you flounced.

This one's on my to read list, so can you spoil what's so bad about the ending? I don't want to go in and have a main character death, or the couple you're pulling for to not end up together, lol!

On the related note of sameness in stores (which I see A LOT. especially in the Bella/Jasper vampy ones), I never really understand why Jessica is SUCH a b*tch or sl*t all the time. Yeah, she was jealous of Bella in the series, but she wasn't THAT bad, was she? Lauren was, other girls were, but Jessica wasn't that bad, and they ended up friends once she finally got Mike's attention, right?

So, after all my griping I have to say I can thoroughly recommend How to Save a Life. Yes it falls into to some Twific clichés but it does have a really interesting take on a now well know dynamic and draws some interesting facets out of these characters...It's moving and heartfelt and the author has worked very hard to keep up the story's momentum and believability .

I love my Jasper/Bella, so thought I'd branch out into Emmettland, but I've been disappointed by the few that I've read so far. They're either madly in love when they first set eyes on each other, or it's just PWP. HEA is a must, but I love angst on the way there. I prefer vamp stories, but read AH as well.

I know, right? I always think of Emmett as Bella's brother. So them together is just wrong. Kind of like Rose and Jasper

But then I'm not quite ready for anything but Bella/Edward. However, I'm not against mixing up some of the others
