Hmm. I think Tristan was the name of the hero in one of my old favorite historical novels.  He was a very hot pirate if I remember correctly  :D :D :D :D :D

I wonder what happened to that book.....

I love the name Tristan. Are you thinking of the old Celtic/French legend of Tristan and Iseult? They made a movie out of it called Tristan and Isolde a few years back with James Franco. I think the story predates the similar Lancelot and Guinevere romance.

My parents gave me an ordinary name too--Lisa. Kids thought it rhymed with pizza. Fortunately I wasn't too much of a nerd to point out that it didn't.  :D

ETA: Now the name Tristan reminds me of a very hot Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall.

My name is not so bad, I guess.  I was born in 1961 and my mother had this obsession with Jackie Kennedy, so I was named Jacqueline.  I was fine with that until I met this guy in my teens.  When I asked his name and he said Jackie, I asked him how he knew my name but he was talking about his name.  I didn't believe him and made him show me his drivers license!  We dated for a couple months and it was so funny when someone would say Jackie and we would both answer!   :D :D :D

I loved that name when I was a teenager and chose Jacqueline as my confirmation name. As the female form of Jacob, it means 'may God protect'.

I was originally going to call my daughter by her first name, but my country bumpkin relatives had such a hard time with Ashlynn, they were calling her everything from Ashley to Ashton to Adrienne(freaking Adrienne? really??), so within a couple of days, I switched it and started calling her by her middle name, Skye. And NOW people try like hell to call her Skyler. No, no 'Ler, just freaking SKYE.

And my youngest is Alissa, but half my family wants to call her Alisha or Alicia. WTF, people?? It's not that damned hard, seriously! Should have called her by her middle name too, but then we'd have a Skye and a Raine, and people would think we were total hippy dippy, but we're really not.

Lots of great names. I love Skye and Raine and I'm not hippy dippy really. But I like the nickname Ash too.

I was able to influence my nephew's name, which I really like--Austin Nathaniel. (Though I tried to get my brother to consider Austen as an alternative, which definitely didn't go over well).

Actually? I kind of like it too for a girl.  I can see calling her Cally or Rissa - it would have some really cute nicknames.   ;D

Not sure about Thomas though.  I would go with Tomas over the old fashioned Thomas if you wanted to name your daughter that.  Thomas would make me think of Thomasina - yuk.  Though a girl named Tommy is always interesting...

And?  All my brothers and sisters had normal names.  I had a weird one - named after a family friend.  I got teased a lot about it.  I really hate my name and would change it in an instant if it wouldn't upset my parents.  They even get upset when I shorten it.  My sisters and brothers can shorten their names but not me.  So when you think about a different name, keep that in mind.  Give the kid options.

Sorry...*steps off soapbox*

My name was actually shortened to Rissa and I didn't really like it, but everyone is different.

My name isn't that different, but it has a different spelling than what most people think, so I always have to spell it or I end up with extra letters and missing letters in my name.  And there was a popular us tv show whose main character was very close to my name, so I always got called that instead (of course my parents couldn't have known that when they named me.)

My daughter shares her name with a cousin, and the cousin goes by Dia instead of Lydia and I would be fine if my daughter decides to do that too.

On one of the baby name websites (I haven't been to them for this pregnancy yet) they have a feature for each name where people who have that name can add comments on if they were teased, if the name was often mispronounced or misspelled, etc.  I think that is a really helpful feature.

I love those names!  :-*

Here all names have to be approved by the registry office. If they are too weird, the name itsself or the spelling, you are not allowed to call your kid that. So, not calling your kid like a day, month etc, not like an object... But people are creative enough to get strange names for their kiddos...  :D

It is the same here in Austria, but the rule is waved for foreigners.  I have a friend that just had a baby who made up the name using a computer program that combined the sounds she and her husband like best, it is a unique name and I am still not sure of how to pronounce it.  Before she could get the birth certificate, she had to get a letter from her embassy saying that it was okay to name the child that in her home country.  I won't be doing that to my son.

Glad you and your bump are doing good.  We found out ours is a boy, and while we agree on the first name (my husband had it picked out before we were married) he has now decided the middle name should come from a Star Wars character, and while I am a big Star Wars fan, I definitely don't think our son should be named after it.

This reminds me of a twific I read where their kids were named Luke and Leia (maybe twins?), and I think their dog was named Chewie. I can't remember the name of the fic either and it's been bugging me since I read your post. Hmmmmm...

I'm waiting on my youngest to decide she'd rather go by Raine than Alissa, because Raine is MUCH less common than all the variations of Alissa out there. Alyssa, Elyssa, Elissa, etc. She's nearly 11 now, I'm waiting on her to hit her teen years, lol. We mostly call her Lissa though, so it stands out a tiny bit at least.

I'm really glad we went with Skye for the oldest, because Ashlynn is a LOT more common now than it was 17 years ago. I thought I was being funny, naming her after a p0rn star, and seems like others had the same idea!

That was cool! I'm not surprised the name Isabella is so popular now. It's a great name and reads (sounds?) good for sexy times too!

Haha - so far tonight both of my children have been named!

Matron got one and this shows the other.  Considering I am thousands of miles away on an island it is freaky!

Well, Isabella means "Devoted to God", so it fits, right?

It's one of my pet peeves in fics when they say "Did you know that Isabella means beautiful in Italian?" and i just wish that one time Bella would say "NO, it doesn't! Bella means beautiful, yes, but not Isabella!"  :-\

My daughter's second name is Isabela (with one L). She's 15 so twilight wasn't written yet when we named her...must be fate...you know what else is "fate"? My son was born 10 yrs ago on May 13...you bet i will never forget Rob's bday!  :)

My maiden last name is common here, like Smith for the US, so my siblings and i have 2 first names to make it easier to identify us and not be confused for people in the police watchlist  ;D My brother was once stopped from going on a plane bec his name matched someone in the hold departure order. His second name "saved" him so they quickly determined he wasn't that person. at least i like my name but it is so "american" not the usual spanish sounding of my generation, hence mispronounciation/misspelling of it is common. That's why i go by my nickname instead. It's still American sounding but would be hard to mispronounce.

My married last name is also very common, hence we gave our kids 2 first names as well to avoid possible legal problems in the future. We call them by their first names. Here, nicknames are the norm. Sometimes it's unrelated to the real name that you get surprised if someone is called by their proper name and wonder, "who?"

Calibre - downloadable basic library setup - all columns discussed in set up
« Reply #1094 on: October 25, 2013, 05:51 PM »
Okay, so I had a bunch of ladies on FB asking Calibre set up questions and then it occurred to me   :-[  I could create a blank library that would have all the columns and zip it up so you could just import it as a starting place.  You still have to set up FFDL to download into the columns and everything.  And you probably want to rename it.  but it is a starting place...

It's zipped because I have to set it up as a folder.  Unzip it and put it in your My Documents  or Dropbox or whatever.  Then open Calibre, on the library icon select Switch/Create library, find the folder wherever you placed it, select "use the previously existing library..." and hit okay.  You can open your old library and copy stuff into it by highlighting the stories in the old library, right click, copy to library.  If you want to use the new library, select delete after copy.

Okay, let me know if you have any questions.....

Review justginger - People Like Us
« Reply #1095 on: October 25, 2013, 06:33 PM »
I just had my first scare under the new regime. I couldn't find drotuno's sin & innocence anywhere but on ffn and since I don't have calibre...  But just when I was going to pull my hair out because I couldn't find it on that Polish site either, I found drotuno's blog and she posted PDFs there. Phew!

I finally, finally finished up justginger's People Like Us! I hate to say this, but I liked it! It was so, so, so long, but I really liked the journey of Edward and Bella. Believe it or not, if the sequel were complete, I would actually start reading it now. The writing is fair, and the SPaGs are pretty horrible at times, but the story itself is good. I'm curious enough to want to know what happened to these two and their family. I think someone on here rec'd her other story Hope Springs recently and I may give that a go after S&I.

I am just re-reading DEFYING GRAVITY by Jenny0719 or you could try TIDES OF FATE by Sparklingtwilight. Both are really good, IMO.

I still use it once in a while. I set it up to save to my ebook folder. It still works though the keep trying to block it.  These guys don't really ask permission like Steve did.  Frankly I've heard of that James guy - the one that told Steve he no longer had permission to use Flagfic on FFnet? And some of the stuff he tells people is not necessarily consistent with FFnet's policy.  So I don't know if I would accept him as the final word.  But that is me.   :P
