  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
Thread #5 - We are crazy talkers here! Join in the fun!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

Please tell me that Grasping Darkness has an actual plot! 90 pages in and nothing has happened except sexy times - creepy stalker sexy times that are the same but told in BPOV and EPOV.

I'm tempted to flounce - and you know I don't flounce! - but I'm not sure that I want to invest over 1000 pages worth of reading time if something doesn't actually happen soon!
You know, I wasn't loving how the entire BPOV was repeated in more detail from EPOV but then I realized...   The first chapter was originally written as a one shot, right?   So, I'm guessing she was basically starting the story over so that's why she retold things from the beginning?   Anyway, I don't think I'm very far ahead of you...   Just hoping that they don't relive each chapter from each POV because that can become a little much if it's that way through the whole book.  And yes, so far its been all smut but I'm starting to see the beginnings of a plot.  :)

LOL And I'm laughing because what Ella said is so true...  since it's Edward creepy stalking we're thinking its kinda hot.    :D

To me it did. A very unique twist on plot.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
I don't want to say too much more because you need to experience it on your own, plus its been awhile with many fics in between. Again I read this as a wip, so lemons are weeks apart, not page after page. No worries if you flounce it though because we all don't have to like the same thing. It's still my fav vamp fic though.

On another note, I am about 100 pages into Creature of Habit. It's ok, but slow to get going. I will keep at it.
I liked Creature of Habit, but it wasn't my my favorite thing ever...   Good, just not great!    Thanks for the tip on Grasping Darkness...   I have only flounced a couple of fics and find it really difficult to do so I'm in this one for the long haul.  :)

For those interested these are results for Booker prize 2013 of the popular vote, in reverse order

Kate Atkinson: Life After Life – 2
Neil Gaiman: The Ocean At The End Of The Lane – 2
Lucy Cruickshanks: The Trader of Saigon – 3
Suzie Tullett: Little White Lies and Butterflies – 20
Meike Ziervogel: Magda – 31
Zoe Venditozzi: Anywhere's Better Than Here – 37
I've been wanting to read The Ocean At the End of the Lane!  Did you guy's read Neil Gaiman's Stardust?  It's one of my favorite books ever...   If you haven't been ruined by watching the movie, then definitely check out the book.  If you've seen the movie, you'll never be able to appreciate the book IMO.       Thanks for posting this list, I'll check out the others!

I just need to know if I can skim the lemons.  Because they were a little weird for me.  I always think it's funny that we accept Edward's weird ways because he is Edward.  If he were anyone else - say Mike? - Yeah. Throw his a$$ in jail.  But Edward - Oh, come back and attack me again please....

LOL! I love fiction....  ;D

The things we do for love...the things we accept because it's Edward. *swoons* Like a man who's domineering and obsessive outside of the bedroom.

I'm with you Ella on the lemons. And I agree with a comment you've mentioned before... Lemons don't bother me in erotica perhaps because I'm expecting them, but in FF they can be such a turn off when there's too many of them, which can easily happen when an author plots out the story as a WIP rather than a cohesive whole.

I'm a little jealous of those of you reading vampward right now (Grasping Darkness, Creature of Habit, My Mate) and am tempted to shelve the HP series I'm immersed in, but I just can't. I'm on the Hogwarts Express and really enjoying G. Norman Lippert's ride! *chug, chug, chug, Whoohoo!*

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a great read but too short. :(

Stardust is great, but I think my fav works by Gaiman are American Gods, Neverwhere and The Graveyard Book.  I flove him.  He is one of my favorite authors.  I have everything he's ever written in signed, first editions.  EVERYTHING!  I started collecting his work when I was itty bitty-- starting with The Sandman.  There is the prequel to Sandman coming out this month if you're interested.

Because we just talked about My Mate and the sequel My Power, I wanted to let everyone know that she is pulling her stories. I just flagged them because I want to read !! I am sure you have already gotten them all, but I wanted to warn those that mostly work on ipads like me and rarely boot laptops anymore.

From her profile:

UPDATE (10/14/13). The time has come to exit my writing stage. Fear not, I have zero ambitions to publish. This has been a fantastic hobby and now it's time to dive into something new. But these stories are like my little pets and I don't want to leave them alone here without me. So they'll come down when I go.

Everything will go October 31st - including my early Star Wars pieces.

I cannot express enough how lovely it has been meeting all the delightful, amazing readers. So many of you have left thoughts and notes that have made my days beautiful and I want to thank you for that.

Love to you guys - remember not to take any fan fiction too seriously. Your lives are the reality - you are where the action really happens.

Also Heat doesn't show complete, but there is an epi, so I guess she just didn't hit the complete button.

Thanks for the update RDM, I've just finished My Power adn I have to agree it a bit 'meh' after My Mate but PR's 'meh' is a lot better than most authors so...all good. I think I've downloaded everything I wanted from her.

I promise to try and spend more time over here with you.  But you're such a chatty bunch!!  Part 5.  WTF?? :-*

Chippy! Hello! And yes, you're right if there was a Olympic sport on chatter we'd win all three medals!  :ecomcity:  :D

From what I can remember you could skim the lemons and still get the most out of the story, but, for some reason I really like Kiya's lemons ( Hunger Light's especially ) and I'm not generally that big on excess lemonex....

Hey Ladies
I know most of us bemoaned the length of our libraries/TBR lists...I was thinking what would happen if I just started at the bottom, the first fic I ever saved and just worked my way up? Steadfastly, not letting myself get distracted...keep adding to it, but at least clearing some of the back-log....I don't know if it would work. Astro, what happened when you started reading yours in alphabetical order over last year's summer holidays?

I tried to do something similar a couple of months ago. I went to the bottom of my TBR and picked out about 10 fics and asked the PTS crew what they would rec. My conviction to the list didn't last long but I did read the Lolashoes trilogy, the first of the Gravity series, and Edward Cullen Dick for Hire. Then I got distracted with newbies... I still have Betty Smith's The Gentleman From Washington State on that little list of must reads. I was surprised to find those 'classics' at the bottom and told myself to keep checking the bottom of my TBR every now and then.

WTFL? what the Fuck, Loopy!!! If i recall correctly, you mentioned this in the old thread but it didn't really sink in at the time.  ??? :-\ Seriously, did you read it? how do they "do" it? how will it fit?!
Ewwwwwwwwwwww

Am with you ella, can't read bestiality. I also don't read paranormal, werewolves stuff (well except for the original twilight series). Like demaris, i prefer humanward but have read a few vampwards that are highly rec'd by you guys. Still lining up grasping darkness... Too many books to read, too little time... I have since given up looking at my TBR fanfic list... I just read what was just recently mentioned here... hence, thank you for rec'ing Breakaway Bella, am enjoying it so far  :)
Lol, I was bored when I read that book and it was only 17 pages of Dinosaur sex.  :o :D
They don't actually have sex - he basically uses her naked body to rub against to get off.  :o
Typical guy really.  :D
I totally agree with you hun - I prefer humanward, though I've read a couple vampward.
I don't why but I love Edward as a human, there's just something about him being mortal that makes me love him more.  :P

OMFG!!!!! Me and the best gay went shopping today and when we went into Boots (Pharmacy) in the mall we saw a 6ft cardboard cut-out of Rob in the perfume aisle.
I wanted to take a piccie of it but the security guard wouldn't let me.
Yep, you read that right Boots have employed a security guard for a cardboard cut-out!!
I asked the security guard why they had done this and he said that Boots was fed-up of having to try and stop people stealing "Rob" even though there's 3ft of solid glass in the middle of the cardboard to keep it in place!!
I think the guard thought I was on day release with how excited I was getting when I spotted it and I think my best gay thought I was going to go into labour early!!!  :D :D

That would be okay if you could flounce.  But I think for you, it would be miserable because sometimes you just aren't in the mood for that angsty high school fic that sounded so good after you finished Wide Awake, but now that you really want a firemanward, it's not quite doing it.  And you have to continue because flouncing is not allowed.  >:(  :(

Yeah, I think that was what happened with Astro.  :P

I could do it but I probably wouldn't get past that first chapter before I would be on to the next one.  I guess I could read the first and last chapters and I would be good  :D :D :D :D

I haven't updated my e reader since May, I am I trying to get through a lot of what I have on it before adding anything new to it.  There are 409 items on my reader, but it doesn't tell me how many are left to be started.  I have continued to download stories and will read one shots or short stories on my phone.  Luckily I am able to set aside stories that don't quite make the grade (its not flouncing if I could return to them someday).

I also have to figure out how to get my old Calibre library from the shared desktop computer, to my new laptop where I have been downloading new stuff since May.  I would just start a whole new library, but I know I have downloaded stories that I already have in my old library in my quest to make sure I don't loose the good ones.

Though if I did succeed I've no idea how I could've got him outta the store as like I said it had 3ft of solid glass in the middle of it. But where there's a will, there's a way, right?  :D

I told the hubby if he took me back to the mall this weekend, he could somehow steal Rob while I pretend to go into labour or something so everyone's attention was diverted - he refused, even after I promised to let him do things that we've not done for a few weeks.  >:( :D
If I can't steal Rob, I'm so gonna try and get my piccie taken with him.  :)

I wish someone had thought of that "free" Rob idea - I would bath in the stuff just to get a few dozen free Robs.  :D

How big is the library? Do you have an external drive, flash drive or online drive you could copy it to?

If so, you copy the library folder to your new computer, go to the calibre library thing & select Switch/Create Library, browse to the old library folder, click the "Use the previously existing library...." and click OK.

Go to the newly added library.  You can then either highlight all the stories in that library and copy it to your new one or copy from the new one to the old one.

It will merge any of the same books.  You may want to merge into the newer library, just so that you keep the newer version of the story in case there are changes.

Don't delete until you are sure nothing is missing - i.e. the new version doesn't have all the chapters because they were pulled.

Let me know if you have any questions.... ;D

Thank you for the detailed instructions.  I will have to bookmark this post so I can come back to it once I get around to attempting this move.  The library isn't very big, so it will prolly fit on a flash drive, I just have to sort out my stories from my husband's e books and hope that when it transfers it keeps the metadata with all of the covers that I downloaded or created.

If you take the whole library, and then only highlight and copy your stories, you shouldn't lose any of the metadata.
