Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

I LOVE her stories. I found one of her stories, Turkey Baster, when I was in a fluffy mood searching through the family tag. It was not what I was expecting, one of those crazy plots where Bella wants to get pregnant by any means necessary. It was alright. But I liked the writing enough to see if there were any more for me to read through and I was so happy when I found a handful to choose from. I'm finding it hard to categorize her stories, because they each have such a different plot. I noticed that some of the earlier stories have some underlying tones of faith and family that were written with respect. Not anything that you'd find that would try to push values onto the reader.

a couple of my favs:
Catwoman SO GOOD! Wealthy Edward moves into the neighborhood for some solitude and ends up butting heads with the crazy cat lady across the street.

Finding My Thunder Set during the Civil Rights movement in Tennessee. This was on my to be read list for months, and when I finally started reading I couldn't manage to do anything else. There's a lot of race discussion, mostly on the subject of Bella passing as white and how she and Edward can relate to one another in this aspect. The physical traits are OOC. Just a warning if you haven't read it.

I just finished Look How You Turned Out and had so much fun reading it. I think this was probably the most carefree story that I've read from counselor. Probably also the most lemon heavy, too! Her earlier stories were so tame compared to this one. So many funny innuendos. Basically;
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
I don't know if that needed a spoiler but the title of the story was pretty revealing but anyway

It's like when I get a song stuck in my head and can't think properly until I listen to it. With stories, my annoyance is usually quelled as soon as I figure out the name of the story and go on with my business.

I've read most of her stories but I'm really bad at summaries so I'm gonna save you from that ;)

Look How You Turned out is about
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
You can give it a try, it has short chapters but I really don't know how good it will be reading it at once. I read it as a WIP and loved it.

Told you I'm terrible at summaries! Hope this helps. ^-^

Thank you both! I will go try out some of her fics.   :-*

Thanks for tossing out all the reccomendations!  But this, of course, expands my problem of having not enough hours to read, write, review and such.  I'm new to the fandom, so I haven't even read the classics yet.

Welcome to the club! I'm always trying to read more than adding to my TBR-list. I'm always failing! Even if I manage to read 3 fics per week I add 5 more per week  to my list.  :banghead: My biggest fear is to run out of fics.  :D

Me too.  That said, I do reread my favorites and I have a few fics that I'll read if I feel I need a certain type of story (daddyward, angst bomb, feel good, O/S, etc...)
One of the rare few....

You can delete it, Demaris. Go to Preferences in Calibre and to Add your own columns. Then select the column you want to delete. On the right side of this list are the options (arrow up, remove (three green arrows in form of a triangle), add, info, arrow down).  I'm not at home, so I can't check my library, but I'm sure there is such an option. Maybe you have to select the column and click the blue "i" first, but I rather think it's selecting the column and then hitting the button with the three green arrows in a triangle. Don't forget to hit apply after doing that.

Yes this is correct. I was just doing it from memory earlier, but I just now checked and if you highlight it then hit the recycle sign it will let you delete it. ;)

Thank you my lovelies! I will get onto this when I get home. I just found I had column I never used and just took up 'space'

On another note....what's going on on the 152 thread? I've been away for a while, I know, but when I'm the one able to respond to a story request?! I get a bit....nervous; I've never been able to get a look in before, I'd blink and the story would be posted! I feel like I'm finally playing with the grown-ups (move over FFG!)

May I ask what this fic is about? I don't think I have read any of this authors fics.... What kind of fics does she write?

I just finished Counselor's Look How You Turned Out and was pleasantly surprised that it was a straight up romance. I'm more used to her stories having drama or angst in them. I think ajamm and super creep described it well in the posts above. It was really good; I love the way she writes!

OK, time for me to go all fangirl. My favorite stories of counselor's are her historical ones... She has this way of setting up the time frame so you feel like you're there. The language often takes some getting used to, but it's so well written that it doesn't take long to immerse oneself in the fic. There's something about the rhythm of the language in which she writes that really gets to me--in an authentic way. Plot wise, it never feels like there is a guaranteed HEA, you just keep hoping until the end. I like that tension, and I've never been disappointed.

OK, now see, I'm from across the pond and I'm beginning to think that maybe 'shudders' has recently  become Americanised as 'shutters'? There is no other explanation as to why so many authors use it? They can't all not be able to spell....I see it in at least 60% of the fic I read, it makes no other sense. What do our American sisters think?

Also I wanted to ask, how old are 7 graders because I have a 7th Grade Edward in this story who not only plays in a band  with his friends from school (which is fair enough) but has a 'following' and is struggling to handle his new found 'fame'? his music is 'unapologetically loud and anti establishment' would a 7 grader even know what 'anti-establishment' means?

EDIT: Oh joy! This story also comes equipped with Beta suggestions at no extra cost!! Foock me....

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
But for both the author and the beta to not pick it? It's odd?

As for the 7 graders, I get them hearing the term from someone older but to understand the it so well that they can 'write' music to fight against it? He also has piercings and all sorts. GOD! it's at times like this that I wish I could flounce.....

I am probably late to the game on this one. I would think that a 7th grader (12 or 13 years old) would be a bit young to have a following on the music scene, impossible, no, improvable, yes. I mean Justin Bieber hit pop super fame at 14 so it could happen. Many public schools do have music programs that start in the 1st and 2nd grades. So I could see a 12 or 13 year with musical ability. Also it would all depend on the household they grew up in. My brother was an incredible guitar player by grade 6 and stopped taking lessons by that time. His bands were cover bands when he was in elementary and middle school (and not very good). By the time he reached junior high they sounded better and even had a few songs of their own.

Again as far as anti-establishment and knowing what it means it would depend on the household. I live on the outskirts of a major city. If you go to a Super Walmart at 2a.m. you may be surprised at the non-conventional families shopping at that time. I've seen anti-establishment punk rockers with their 2 and 4 year olds in tow. The kids with faux hawks and pierced ears. Also rocker parents with kids dressed in  black with ear and nose piercings. Walmart is an interesting place in the wee hours during the summer. However with an average American household I can't see it happening. My God-daughter just turned 16 and she is more interested in fitting in than standing out. It seems like that's how it is with most kids her age and younger.

Then again the character being described in the story could be the exception instead of the rule. It is plausible but would probably work better if the characters were older.

Speaking of "7 Graders" I have kind of a general question that relates to fanfiction school year that I've always been curious about. Whereabouts are you located and when does the school year start for kids? If you know. I figure some of you will know better than others if you have your own children. I've seen in so many AH stories that Edward is 18 going on 19 in his final year of school. They also stick to his canon June birth date, and as a fellow June baby I can't help but feel a little off about that.

I'm in the southern states of the US and school pretty much always starts in August and lets out towards the end of May. I enrolled in school when I was 5 and graduated high school at 17, going on 18. My birthday is in the summer when school is out, so while all of my friends had parties during the year and were finally legal, I was always the baby. Still a little bitter about that  But I got curious and checked the website for Seattle Public Schools and it looks like school starts in September and lets out in June, a week shy of Edward's birthday. He still would have been 17! Unless he started late.

I have lots of fanfiction feels but have never had an outlet to discuss them, so I might have to gather all of my thoughts and see what the rest of you think. I love this website  :-*

Offline dasbaiyo

It varies based on the district.  In my local area, the K-12 runs from August 19th to June 6th.  For what it's worth, I'm a late June baby and I didn't turn 18 until after I graduated high school.
One of the rare few....

I am on long Island our schools run from September till the last week of June. Here it depends on your birth date.  My school district you have to be turning 5 by Dec 1st in order to enter kindergarten.  If you are after you have to start the following year.  I know some schools go by September date of birthday.

In my state/district, you had to have turned 5 before, I think, November, to start school. I turned 5 in December, which caused me to start school a year late, and so I had already been 18 for six months when I graduated. School does go from Mid-August to the end of May or first week of June here. I was always a year older than all my friends. I missed the cutoff date by like, three weeks, but they wouldn't make an exception, in spite of me passing all kinds of tests.

I think they've changed the cutoff date, but I'm not sure what it is now, but I know my son was born in July and turned 18 a month and a half after he finished up.

In South Texas we generally start in late August (it was closer to the beginning of August for a long time, but then the state legislature passed a law to make it later) and are out by the end of May or the 1st week in June.  Two of my kids have or will turn 18 in the middle of their senior year (December/January birthdays).  My middle child will turn 18 at the beginning of his senior year.  He was old enough chronologically to start kinder when he was 5 since he's an August birthday and we have a September 1 cutoff, but he wasn't socially/emotionally ready so we waited a year.  Don't regret the decision either.

  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
It's been a while since I was in school. But I was an October baby and younger than most in my class. When I was a kid, they let parents decide if you were old enough for the September to December kids. Most ended up starting a year later. My mom wanted us out of the house. Okay not really. Though it did give her a bit of a break.  :D :D :D :D

Most June kids would still be 17 at graduation. However, I'm seeing more of the older kids where they go to preschool and stuff and end up starting a little later. So maybe?   I really think most of the writers who mess up the ages may not be from the US. I really have to stop myself from commenting sometimes on the things they have high school kids doing. Or not doing.

Pierced eyebrow, lip chin? Social Services :D. Unfortunately this Edward lives a upper middle class life with Edward and Elizabeth Masen...as vanilla as it comes...But you know what? Over here, in England, the school terms run from September to July the only slight variation is if you're in a private school, their terms tend to start and finish a little later but only by a couple of week or so. I'm a June baby too, my problem was I would invariably be sitting an exam on my birthday!

Also, has anyone read Neverending Math Equation by twanza If so, could you confirm that it is in fact an EB? The summary is might cryptic ....

It kinda waffles back and forth, but ends with B/Jas. I thought it was pretty good, but I wanted to smack the spit out of Bella at least once while reading it.

I live outside of Philadelphia. The kids here start back to school the last week of August or right after Labor Day. Depending on snow days, they are out between the first to the third week of June. Like Matron I missed the cut off date and had to wait until the next year to start school. Most high school seniors are usually 17 or 18 here.

Another issue I had with Twilight and the Fanfiction is Charlie supposedly being poor. My father was a police officer for 30 years and at the time of his retirement got about $45,000 a year and that was 18 years ago. His chief was being paid more than double that. If you do a google search you can find the median expected salary for a typical Sheriff/Police Chief in the United States is $98,015. It's usually much higher in big cities. I found a small town in Oregon that was looking for a Police Chief offering between $98,000 and $118,000 depending on experience as a starting wage. This town was smaller than Forks. So I think that Charlie could have provided well for Bella. I would also think he would have purchased her a newer, safer and more reliable vehicle.

Um, he was paying too much for child support? ? ? And eating out at the diner 3 meals a day does add up.  Plus Vitamin R does get pricey.   :D :D :D :D :D

Yeah, I'm thinking there was something wrong - even if it was 10 years ago....  Though eating out a lot does add up.  Vitamin R is not expensive beer though....

LOL!  :D

Seriously! He didn't renovate his house, he used his patrol car as his car, never went out except for the diner or the reservation. He either watched sports on TV or went fishing. He didn't have a computer or Internet. He had to have quite a little nest egg even with paying child support. He probably could have sent Bella to a decent university. It never understood that.

Was Charlie supposed to be poor? I guess I missed that. I just always figured he stayed in the house he and Renee and Bella shared when she was little, and just never moved out of habit. Charlie never struck me as the kind of guy who cared a lot about things like clothes and household decor, not poor. He obviously had enough money to go visit Bella or go on trips with her during the summer, once she decided she didn't want to visit him in Forks anymore. Poor people can't just go off to Disneyland for two weeks in the summer.

Is that something that shows up a lot in fics, and I missed it there too?
