I'm on 1.20, and the FFDL plug in is just sitting there, when I try to update a story. Stuck on getting metadata.

I can accept more changes in non-canon and AH stories than I can in vampire ones. I can see Bella being much different if Edward left and didn't come back for a long time, or if she ends up with someone else. But she should still be recognizable to readers. But changing her looks completely (making her natural blonde, or her ethnicity, etc) is just writing about an OC named Bella. I don't even like AH stories where Bella is too different, like a bitchy party girl. Part of why I did like Bella was she was sweet and shy and self sacrificing.  Leave Alice and Rosalie to be the bitchy ones.

I'm making my own list of all the "decent" Edward's I meet in fanfiction. Not exactly shy/geekward which there are a few that I've read and enjoyed, but there are SO many takes on Edward where he's this sleazy manwhore who has seen the light when he meets virginal Bella, or even worse, he was secretly in love with her but couldn't have her so he went and slept with the entire state and then finally confesses his love and says he did it all because he couldn't be with his one true love. (Not that you can't be a decent man and have a lot of sex. But I've read one too many stories where he's a rude manwhore for no reason) Total end of the spectrum from the virgin vampire. I like Edward nice and non controlling/guilt tripping/just being a plain butthole out of love.

Oddly enough, I'm more forgiving of my Edwards than I am of Bellas. Pound of Flesh Edward was pretty opposite, as was Clipped Wings Inked Armor Edward, but I loved both of them!

Bella Swan 'sweet and shy and self-sacrificing'? If I remember right she spent a lot of her time trying to get in Edward's pants, despite his protests (shy?), using her best friend to make herself feel better (self sacrificing?) and making Edward's life a misery by her inability to let go of said friend (sweet?).  I'm really happy when Twific Bella bears no resemblance to Twilight Bella, I'm less likely to want to push her off a skyscraper....

I agree and will go further.  I think Bella comes off as totally self-absorbed.  She notices nothing that is not directly related to Edward, she hardly cares about anything if its not directly related to Edward but a the same time is selfish (thinks of E's marriage proposal and how she dealt with Jacob).  She is not a great daughter nor is she a good friend, on top of which her communication skills leave a lot to be desired.  Thank goodness a lot of FF fixes these character flaws.  Only saying.

I agree with your comment related to Edward. But I really get annoyed when it comes to Jake. He was such a manipulator. And he knew Bella wasn't his imprint. Yet he kept chasing after her. I wanted to slap some sense into him, but I'd probably have broken my hand.

Yep, if Jake had been Jane I would say the same thing, its not OK to 'use' your 'best friend' but because, hopefully, Jane wouldn't have been 'in love' with Bella it would have been slightly different. Bella knew how Jake felt right off the bat and she used that knowledge to keep him close when she had no one else, her 'sun' my arse!..I'm with Caro she was a lousy friend.  Yes, Jake was manipulative and mostly a tosser, but he wasn't the one with the boyfriend who should have known better and kept their distance...

If that's not enough incentive to keep reading fanfiction, I don't know what else is!

Bella is 17, and stupid. Jake is 15, and stupid. Edward is ancient, still stupid. This is why I hated everyone! I think the majority of us are grown women now and can see things in a more mature light. Pretty sure I felt more mature than I really was as a teenager, but I was still stupid. I had a couple friends confess feelings for me at that age. What was I supposed to do for them?! I enjoyed their company as friends but didn't return their feelings. I also had the same situation occur with boys I fancied. They didn't return my feelings and I got over it eventually. But I also didn't have a boyfriend that I was making uncomfortable by still keeping other male company with  The whole saga was a mess, but easy enough to read through.

I didn't read it but I thought the concept was interesting. FF.net won't let me right click anymore so I can't paste the authors synopsis, but she basically rewrote original characters with Jacob and Edward being girls fighting over a male version Bella. It's supposed to be Jacob/Bella but not at all since they're original characters...

My goal in this is not beautiful prose, or arguments for canon-compliance (because a white boy raised by Renee and a native girl raised by Billy simply have too many variables for any interpretation to be the final word in how they turned out), or to come up with "fixes" for the source material. My goal is to examine several critical J/B scenes and see how personal preconceptions about gender in society a) changes the way I write a scene and/or influences my character choices, and b) changes the way I feel about the behavior of the characters, even if they're largely doing the same thing they did in canon. I'm hoping other people do the same (that is, think about how Bella being a boy and Jacob and Edward being girls influences what they think about the actions and thought process of all three). I think really, really awesome discussions could result.

I had to read that summary a couple of times to sort it out in my mind!  'Bella' is the vampire? Is that right? 'Edward' is a wolfgirl? Shoot, is that right? I'm confused!!!!!!

Okaaayyyy. Errr? So, yeah.... I've a pretty good grasp of literary criticism and deconstruction but...how is this a TWIFIC?! Surely, if you have 'original'  characters, it defeats the purpose? Doesn't it? Still confused.... You've gotta love this fandom, don't ya? It's full of all sorts  Thanks SuperC!

Yeah it's weird. I was searching for something like Freaky Friday where Bella and Ed switch, but found that. I have seen OC slash fics where Bella is a dude and meets Ed.. I probably wouldn't be reading anything published where a teenage boy is torn over two different girls so it really does defeat the purpose. I just thought it was interesting because just from skimming I was able to see she even wrote in a teenage boys libido! The girl version of Edward was obviously saving herself for marriage, so any attempts at getting into her pants would be wrong. But Bella and her teenage hormones had no problem trying to put the moves on her super chaste vampire virgin.
