Thread #5 - We are crazy talkers here! Join in the fun!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

I was in the delivery room when my best friend had her baby (alongside her husband) it was the most...traumatic experience I've had. I think the hospital were short of staff or something because I ended up at the wrong end of the bed holding her legs up while she pushed! Mother of God! I am never having my partner down there...I doubt he'd ever want to have oral again! I still shutter just thinking about it and 'the baby' is 9 years old now...

That's one brave man!  :13: My husband is "scared" of hospitals, nothing on earth would have made him agree to be in the delivery room with me and i didn't bother asking :D though it is not the norm here to have the fathers with you when giving birth...

And that reminds me of the other birthing cliche... The man fainting after seeing blood or the baby coming out...definitely for comedic relief...

I can't comment on the fainting, but in my family the story that is passed about is that when my older brother was born, my dad jumped so high he hit his head on the ceiling.  In over 30 years they have never really denied the story...
One of the rare few....

I'm not so sure it is a cliché; having witness a birth? If I hadn't been busy holding my friends legs to her chest I would have vomited and then passed out in it! That and the fact that she'd turned into a she devil and I was scared sh!tless of her.....

I always thought this was somehow the "American" way of giving birth.  ;) You see it in a lot of movies too... the mom-to-be yelling and cursing and threatening...
Yes, they definitely portray it like that in movies!  I was sure I never wanted to have kids after seeing so many women screaming their heads off! LOL   I didn't do any screaming, only because it wouldn't have helped me any and it would have wasted too much energy!

My husband went in but he stayed up near my head and didn't ever actually look "down there".    He did cut the cord though and I was surprised that he did.     I thought for sure he'd be one to pass out.

My husband was in with me all three times, he saw it all. I had epidurals, but I also had fairly fast labors. Longest was seven hours with my first, and all down from there, three with my second and five with my third.

I remember when I had my third, I had a terrible cough. It was right after she was out, when they get ready to do all the cleaning you up part? The doctor looked away for a second, and I coughed real hard, and blood went everywhere. They thought I was bleeding out there for a second, before I reassured them I had just coughed real hard. :D

A few posts back there was mention of getting burned by WIP stories, and I ran into one last week and I'm still really bummed about it.

My name is Isabella Swan and today, I signed a contract that would put me in the steel tight clutches of a man I didn't know, for four years. A girl's gotta pay for college somehow, right? AH. Come meet 'Sugar Daddy' Edward.

I didn't touch it for the longest time, because the age difference squicked me out and I just couldn't get past the first chapter. Finally got bored and was reading on my cell phone and the mobile browser on ff.net does not tell you whether stories are complete or not, so I was getting all into it and counting down the chapters thinking that the author was getting ready to wrap everything up with a bow because the end was nearing...until it ended and it hasn't been updated in more than a year and a half. LAME!

I love Olderward stories but that one wasn't updated in the longest time so I just gave up :(

My doctor and midwife kept asking if I wanted to feel my daughter's head when it was visible but not "out" and that was not something I wanted to do despite their repeated offers.  My husband did peak down there when they offered and I let him, but he stayed up at my head the rest of the time.

I just saw this on twitter and it made me laugh, mainly because it is so very true (not too sure about the Daleks though).

The top 5 winter sports in Britain:
1 Moaning about snow
2 Slipping
3 Losing A Glove

5 Telling Everyone It's Snowing

It is more or less like that for rain and wind as well, apart from the Dalek building that is.

I have to ask, for everyone that didn't particularly like Twilight or the characters, what brought you to the fanfic in the first place?

I fell into fan fic by accident, only about 18moths or so ago, when I was looking for a video release date for Breaking Dawn and I ended up on a blog site that recommended a 108Year Old Virgin's story - Puddlejumping, with a review about how Edward had Aspergers Syndrome. (My best friend's son has the same condition,) so I read it thinking I could tell her about it...well, I didn't show her since it dealt with Edward's sexual awakening and I thought it might freak her out, but I loved the writing and went on to read everything she wrote, followed by a lot of the stories she recommended, then I thought I wonder if I could write anything worth reading...although it had been a long time since I wrote for pleasure, and the rest is history.  :)

For me, Bella was fine in the first book, but I was a bit put off her character when she let Edward get away with leaving her in the woods in New Moon. I never really cared for Jake in the books, he seemed annoying and very immature, Taylor made him more likeable in the films, but I still can't quite stomach too much Jake in a fic.

I built a snow Dalek once LMAO one year when we had a heavier snow fall, and everyone was trying to build different snowmen in the front gardens, one house made an igloo, one a polar bear, one made a ten foot high snowman and we did a Dalek I made an eye stalk out of a kitchen roll inner with a washing powder ball stuck to the end. (But then again I have young boys who are nuts about Dr Who)

SPandG in the summary doesn't bode well for getting some of us to read further.  Why do so many authors ignore errors in the first thing people will read of theirs?

When Edward Cullen retires ever director in Hollywood might cry! Edward Cullen was a successful actor/billionaire looking for love and a family. Isabella Swan has baggage from here to Hollywood. She has a daughter and a dead beet husband. Will her search of love smack right into her or will it just be too good to be true.

I hope Bella's daughter did inherit her father's coloring.  :D

Search "of" love?  And no question mark - is she asking or telling?

"Ever" director - if they aren't careful  about proofing the summary, why should we try the whole story?  At least she didn't apologize about sucking at summaries, that really turns me off.

How funny, though I still think we moan about rain much more than snow, and with good reason at the moment....'stay afloat Somerset Levels!' *whispers* I am so not a fan of Dr Who never have been, ever, even when the Daleks were made of cardboard...

Jesus, if there is anything that makes me click on the x quicker than Speedy Gonzales it's a badly written summary (SPAGs included).....and the 'this is my first fic' warning. So, did you go ahead and read it?

No, especially when I checked out her profile and it says she's 21, but it reads more like she's 12.

I agree with you about the warning, just like the "I suck at summaries" comment it screams RUN, RUN I have no confidence in what I am writing!

I wonder, does the whole "this is my first fic" and "I suck at summaries" thing actually work?  I know it doesn't among you folks but....

If they say this is my first Fic - hope you enjoy, - even if they are a newbie - I will often give it a try if it sounds interesting.  I like when an author shows pride and excitement.  Too many authors write it more like it is a warning or an apology, I will usually stay away unless it is recommended by someone I trust.
