Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

Judder is to shake rapidly or forcibly, but it is usually used in terms of mechanical objects, like "the car juddered to a halt." Maybe it's a Britishism, because it doesn't seem an alien word to me, other than when used to describe a persons movement, it makes him sound like a washing machine lol.
I think maybe it is a Britishism because I also have never heard the word used before.

Though if it's a "newer" word, I probably haven't heard it. :P

Don't think it's a new word, I'm in my 40s and I've heard it used all my life, probably a British writer like me lol. My pre reader and Beta pick out odd words you don't use in the US that are common usage in the UK.

  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
Talking about Britishisms, I started a story where Bella moved to Forks and meets the Cullens. Alice if course, wants to go shopping. Bella thinks to herself "I really hate shopping but I'll go. It was bad enough I had to go buy jerseys and jumpers..."

Um, I'm assuming she meant tee shirts and sweaters? Because jerseys are the things football players wear and jumpers are thes sleeveless wide necked dresses that you might wear a tee shirt underneath. And really? Other than school uniforms? I haven't seen one since the 70's. My mom had a few when I was a kid.  :D :D :D

I think I may have stopped reading at that point. It was pretty bad.

My dad says a jersey when he means a knitted pullover type sweater, like what a golfer would wear over their white shirt (I tend to think of that as an old fashioned term) a sweater is a jumper again, a knitted top, I would actually say they were the same things. basically knitted tops.

Honestly it's quite a minefield for a British writer lol, for example, we say braces you call them suspenders, what we call suspenders you call garters, we call garters the stretchy ring of frilly elastic a bride wears around the top of her stocking and I don't know what you guys call them LOL, panties/knickers, tarmac/asphalt, hood/bonnet, boot/trunk, tap/faucet the list goes on and on and on LMAO and that's not even mentioning the spelling differences.

Oh yes, I think you posted the picture!  I am so totally not into a manchu!  but THIS manchu!  I'd make an exception.  I can't get over how good this is... I'm only about 40% in.

LOL! The thing the bride wears is also a garter for us...Though braces? Those are the ugly metal things one gets on one's teeth to make them nice and straight.

Yeah, normally I just laugh at the differences and keep going.  But the story was bad already and getting worse.  So I moved on....

I love it when they move Bella and Edward to Britain or Canada or wherever they are from.  As long as they are look like they are supposed to look.  Britward is just plain hot.  Especially when he is an Actorward.  I've read a number of those and liked them. But really, the first thing they tell you is write what you know.  So if you have never been to the Pacific Northwest, don't go writing about it without a lot of research.  I always laugh when they make it seem like you can get from Seattle to Forks in an hour.  Two would be pushing it. The roads are not something you can zoom on unless you are a vampire with a really fancy sports car that grips the curves.  Just saying.  So living in Forks and working in Seattle? Not going to happen.  Yet I see it all the time.  :021:

Oh well, it's fiction.  They can move it anywhere if they want, as long as they let you know they are taking creative license...  ;D

Braces are on the teeth here too, double meaning LOL.

The Gods of Google tell me it's 3 hours 25 mins from Forks to Seattle, so I don't think I would make that mistake LOL.

I've been to the States a few times and I try my best to research stuff...but I probably don't get it all right...in fact I'm 20 chapters written on a new fic (I don't start to post until it's done, so don't go searching just yet) and I have Edward in prison for about 14 chapters to show some of the crap he's had to deal with and why he will be emotionally closed off when he gets out and it has been a bugger to research because Google knows I'm in the UK so gives me mainly UK based prison research stuff...so I'm going with the theory that a lot of the systems will work the same and I'll ask readers to tell me in a positive and constructive way if I've dropped any massive googlies so I can amend it.

BTW, before you say it I know 14 chapters of prison life sounds like a crappy read, but it's all in EPOV and has a fair bit of humor in there, it's a real roller coaster ride. My pre reader and Beta are seriously loving it  :D

I love a well researched story - I've told several writers that you can't get to Forks from Seattle in an hour, unless you talk a helicopter.  When I visited Seattle and Forks, the ferry (between driving on and off and the actual crossing) took almost an hour and then you drive narrow twisting roads for a couple of hours.  Beautiful scenery, I'd like to visit again.  Forks wasn't much, but the Paciffic Northwest is breathtaking.

I've only seen it on the TV and films and I agree, it does look beautiful. I've done round tours of East Coast and West Coast and been back to New York and Boston a couple of times, but not for a while, it was in the years B.C. (before children) :D

Yep research can be a bind, I've never been inside a British prison, let alone a US one, so to start writing convincingly about visiting procedures, morning routines and even little things like how they get mail in and out is a big job. I just hope I've got the bulk of it right.

Isn't there a twilight fic that is sorta like Pretty Woman?  I remember someone recommending it recently and now I can't find the title.   Wait, is this the right thread for this question?  Let me know and I can move it. :)

It's fine as long as we aren't posting a story here. You just want to know the name of something we already talked about. ;)

Does Alcatraz count?  All I know is from TV shows. Though some are reality so those would be fairly correct. I would think gaols and jails would be similar LOL!    I think our prison systems are mostly the same. Though sentence times may be different. California prisons are so over crowded with the three strikes law (a good idea that should have been limited to certain crimes) that they let guys out for good behavior a lot earlier than they sometimes should. (Think Lindsay Lohan) Other than that, it should be similar. ;)

I always thought that jersey was a type of shirt. Y'know, football jersey, I've heard that phrase before. I thought a jumper was a type of pullover dress, one where you wore a shirt under because it was sleeveless?! Vest/pullover was a sweater type deal.  Thanks to the Brits on here to keep us on the right path.
Two 'isms I really like are sleeping policeman and knackerd ....hope I spelt that correctly

My sister lives in the Seattle area & when I've visited, we've gone all over the area. It is a gorgeous place and though I tend to bring the sun with me? It does rain -- a lot. ;)

LOL, when my daughters and I visited in 2010 we didn't see a drop of rain the whole week we were there.  The girls were a bit disappointed.
