Thread #5 - We are crazy talkers here! Join in the fun!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

I just flounced that one actually after seeing someone searching for it in the other thread. Chapter 6 Author's Note: "I don't want to offend anyone who is going to read this chapter: Chinese - it's all I'm saying. I don't want to spoil it for you. It's all in good fun so don't be offended if you're Asian."

I'm not Asian, but there was absolutely nothing funny about the encounter she wrote and I'm still offended. There's absolutely no reason to include racism in a story as humor and then try to brush it off like it's no big deal.  >:( Not glad to have read it, but thankful to know when to jump ship because that story is LONG

That Edward is a mess though, so you'll have to let us know how it turns out.

I was reading this story when it was a WIP - I remember being outraged when I saw that chapter, I guess I hadn't read the A/N. I never finished the story, but went back later to read the epi -
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

But yeah, that sex scene sounds like it would be fun to read.  ;) However - this Edward is an ASS and Bella should have left him after that chapter.
Then to make matters worse, I downloaded this story a few days ago not realizing what it was!

I downloaded it too, and I am Asian. Taiwanese, but Chinese is definitely close enough.  Let's see how angry I get. And regarding Britishisms in a fic set in the US, that is a thing that I find increasingly annoying.  And I know that many people would essentially rage against an author if it was Americanisms in the UK.

Yet another story where I think it's going to be something it's not. I saw it mentioned when someone was looking for it, so I thought it would end up being some hospital drama fic, but the summary just mentions Edward and Bella in their second year of college. You're right about Edward being an ass in this. The plot seems alright, but it was like Edward has the emotional maturity of a child with absolutely no regard for people's feelings and I got this from the first three chapters! Bella's a major flake and then I got to that chapter...bye.

I'm just baffled. If you need to create a warning over something you think might be offensive, then it probably is and you shouldn't post it!

I think the only other story I've read that had a warning regarding racism was something where Bella was asking how Edward how he chose his victims when he was out being the vigilante vampire and whether or not he racially profiled his victims.

I read lemons only if i'm in a very motivated mood.  Otherwise I skip them. With the stories I've read it's all pretty formulaic at this point.  Bella and Edward are both masters at sex.  There's very little awkwardness and not much variety.

Cougarofrob,

I put your story on my alerts. It'll be interesting to see where you go with it.

Thanks hun, I think a lot of it will appeal equally to a guy, there will be quite a bit of drama - I like to write different stories, so if you are looking for something more unusual, check out my past stuff. Serial Killerward...Angelward and Sinnerella...A Jake whose DNA mutates after being infected by vamp venom...

So I'm reading Resident Advisor by addicted to romione bedward   and there was a true to life sex scene. It was Bella's first time, he broke her barrier, and then got really embarrassed because he had to tell her he came too soon LOL!

This story is obviously written by an English writer as she uses way too many British terms even though they are in Seattle. For example, knackered instead of beat, a pub instead of a restaurant, knickers instead of underwear or panties,  etc....  And if you go to the Hard Rock Cafe and want a sandwich? You need to wait for the waitress. They are not magically available from the bartender.

And? Other than the fact Edward is a womanizing jerk, it's good so far. ;)

I read it but I really had to work for it... it was sooooooooo long, she could have made several sequels out of this...
Won't read it again...

Hmmm? I've downloaded this just to see how offensive it is, it might be a difference in humour, we're PC but.....what can I say? sometimes we'll push the envelope a little more than our US cousins, I think. If it's to keep a character or a historical fiction authentic then the language should fit, no?  It like having a Jerkward/ manwhore Edward using the words 'Oh! Fiddlesticks!' instead of 'What the fuck!' (or some variation of that theme), that would seem ridiculous...

Oh! And a pub isn't a restaurant, its a bar (of sorts) restaurants are restaurants.

I read a story where there was a warning because it was set in the Antebellum South with all that entailed; the author went to great pains to explain away all sorts of things which just made me think..if, as a reader, you make a decision to read a story about the American South before the Civil War then ya gonna have to expect certain things...(The summary was very clear) If that is not OK by you then move on to read something else....If I'm honest? That will always be my bug bear when it comes to Fan Fiction, the babying of readers..

Well, Edward improves. And you find out he was adopted at 9 after being abused by his drunk parents. I have to say it is not all that humorous and that Chinese thing made no sense whatsoever. We're Americans. We have doctors here of all nationalities. And he's surprised there's a Chinese one in his room?

But the SPaGs are starting to get annoying. And weird words I don't know. Then there is the stuff that you might see on a TV show about college students. But not at a real college. Because college kids are stupid but not that stupid. I guess I'm hoping it will improve or I will get distracted by something else. Because you know I don't flounce. :D :D :D :D

:D :D :D This poor author probably only knows America through her TV...you'll have to forgive her. It's what you get with a dominant prevalent pop culture...everyone wants to dance even if they don't know the steps.  The UK also has doctors from all racial backgrounds..*shrug* What can I tell ya....*sigh*  ???

LOL! I actually knew that. But she kept calling the Hard Rock Cafe a pub. She has obviously not been to one. It is a full out restaurant with a bar. At least the ones I've been to are.  It's not really a "cafe" as most of the cafes I've been to you order at the register and pay before they bring you the meal.

I actually like British humor having grown up with it.  For some reason, my dad thinks that because it's on PBS and British it must be higher quality television. He thinks Downtown Abbey is a good historical drama and not a soap opera. I know a soap opera when I see one.  ;)

But I do love British humor.  And Doctor Who.  ;D

Is an aula an auditorium?  Because I have been reading British fiction since I was a kid, and I've never heard that word before.

Actually, some of these weird words don't even look British. LOL!

It's an atrium, so you're right, but it's latin, and certainly not a common usage word, don't think many people in the street would know it

See now I wonder if this author is from London? As far as I know there is only 2 in the UK, one in London on Park Lane and one in Manchester; it is very clearly a restaurant. She may very well never seen one.... A pub is such a British institution I can't see how she would mistake anything for a pub that isn't one...

I think ITV, the channel that commissions Downtown, would agree with your Dad, that isn't what is generally thought of as a soap opera, they'd call it a Historical Drama..personally I'm with you!

 addicted-to-romione-bedward is from Romania.

So, I'm sure she learned British English at school, learned some Americanisms from TV and blends in some English sounding words they created themselves...

And if her English school books were as oldfashioned as mine (and my son's, his current book showed Elvis as a Superstar, "Who is that supposed to be?"), I can only congratulate her for her writing ;)

You know, as a not-native-speaker myself, these are all things that don't bother me that much. I have no idea about the reality, as long as it is somewhat believableand there are no huge holes in the story, I'm fine.

I'd bet my last bag of Wotsits that there are students in Oxford/Cambridge that wouldn't know that's a word for atrium! I did Latin all through school I had to look it up!  No one uses that word..WTF?

This is probably another example of an interesting plot with mediocre execution. I skimmed future chapters and it didn't seem like anything that would keep my attention  :015: That Edward was totally stupid wondering why so many girls were upset after he got what he needed from them and couldn't be bothered to remember their names and of course Bella has *feelings* for him despite witnessing all that.

Yeah the story I was referencing basically pinpointed that Edward was a racist prick when he was out munching on humans, because of the time; which is pretty historically accurate since segregation was still prevalent and civil rights wasn't the norm. IDK I just always figured that Carlisle would have been more progressive since he was on the whole no human diet and would be more cultured and accepting, which would have rubbed off on Ed

She probably googled it, just had a look at the HR in Manchester, it does have pics where it says bar and upstairs dining, as if it is more about social drinking than dining.
