So I know a lot of people rec'd this.  I have to say I could barely put it down.  I really enjoyed it. To the point I stayed up until 12:45 am reading it.  When I have to get up at 6.

PDFs can be created in multiple ways. The best is from a typed Word Doc directly into PDF using Adobe.

Most, however, are "printed" to PDF using a PDF writer.  A lot of these are basically pictures of the page. Because the computer sees it as a picture and not words, it can't be converted.

And? I should have a mobi of Withering the Ferns. But I need to get on my computer.  ;)
I think the version that is still on FFN is censored...   not entirely sure about that, but I think to get the original you have to get it from her livejournal.      I had never thought about the fact that some of the PDFs are just pictures.  I guess that's why it's not working for me.

If you happen to have the uncensored mobi version I would LOVE to get a copy!     The copy I have on my kindle is readable, it's just really ugly! LOL   Lots of random black lines and spacing issues.   But, with that being said, I got sucked right into this story!

Calibre Cover Question
« Reply #2883 on: August 14, 2013, 09:04 AM »
I recently added fanficDL to my calibre and started using it after someone on this thread told me about it.  It is amazing that it comes up with how many words are in each fic. But, my problem is that I really liked how FLAG would pull the book cover art that the author had loaded up. Is there a way to get fanficDL in Calibre to pull down that art too?  Instead of having the ugly brown book cover? I did see the cover generator but, that just makes a white page with books on it and the name & author on it.

TIA

Damn, I should be sleeping but now I'm on a fic roll! Ok, my last post of the night.

If you're not reading Awkwardly Yours by Vancouver-Canuck-Girl, then you HAVE to.  Not only does Edward mention the diva cup, but he just called tampons "cooter corks" in today's update.

cooter corks!!!!

I need her to update faster, because I love this Edward.

High school Edward likes a girl named Bella But he's not a smooth-talking kind of fella He has his fair share of inserting foot into mouth And inappropriate risings down south But he's really kind of sweet Even if he's sort of a geek. You may come to hate his bro Who's Edward's number one foe But I promise laughs as the story progresses Because real life is full of stresses

Oh, and I had to modify my post to add that yes, it probably was karma because there is not one comma or period in that summary is there?!
I'm reading this and like you absolutely love this Edward.
My poor hubby got covered in hot chocolate when I read that Cooter Corks line.  :P :D

You can always download the cover art separately - if the author has one on fanfiction or a banner - and then update the metadata of the story in calibre with that file as a for the cover.  When I look for cover art I always check the author's bio or do a google images search.  It is more work, but gets you nicer covers.

Question about file types

With this discussion of pdfs, I was wondering why most of new files posted on here are pdf, it doesn't convert well (or at least not the nicest to epub), and it has previously been mentioned that epub is the smallest file size and I know we worried about server space.  To me it seems like epub converts to other formats well, but I may be biased because I use epubs.  Do the majority of users use pdfs?

I read fanfic on my laptop and prefer PDFs. I like to add notes and edit them as I read. I often get RL books in epub for its size and convert them later, but I don't like those PDFs as much. They're often harder to read.

I think a part of the reason why a majority of fics, particularly the older fics, are in pdf format is because most readers were reading them straight from the websites before e-readers and smartphones (and other formats like epub and mobi) became so popular.  So, pdf format was the easiest and most accessible way to read on the computer until the last few years with the growing popularity of e-readers, tablets, and apps on smartphones.

I've been reading fan fiction since I was a kid starting with Jane Austen, Dr. Who, and Star Wars fics, and back then I would copy and paste from the website (not ff.net) onto a Word document .  Years later, my cousin showed me how to take the word documents and convert them to pdf for easier reading on my computer.  I didn't start using flagfic until mid-2009 when the site started updating more frequently what sites you could download a fic  from and then, gradually starting including more file formats.

Fanficdownloader is a curse and a savior for downloading fics.  A curse because you end up downloading more fics than you could ever read in your lifetime, and a blessing because you do have a variety of stories to pick from.  Unfortunately, Calibre can act up a bit once in a while, but that can usually be fixed by closing out and re-opening or making sure you updated.

modified to add that since I'm on the go a lot and reading off my phone or tablet, I like epubs and mobis the best.

Good to know that epub to pdf doesn't convert the best either (for your ebooks you could download a computer based epub reading software.

Just finished it myself. I read it and loved it too. Thanks for all those reccing it. It was so nice to finally read a story that deserved all the reviews it received! With all of its drama and romance, I don't think I would have fared that well while reading it as a WIP. I'm looking forward to its outtakes once they're posted. Even though the story is over and ended wonderfully, I want more!

I was going to start on the DTE contest entries, but there are so many! Did anyone have any favorites they'd like to rec?

I prefer mobi but epub works as well.  You can read epubs in iBooks very easily, not that I have an iPad.  My husband does though.  PDFs  are mostly unreadable on anything smaller though.  I am curious as to how easy it is to read the PDFs on a iPad mini.

The older stories though, are all going to be PDF because that was the only format the original downloaders would use.  Unless the person cut and pasted into a Word doc.

I think the other thing is that PDFs are pretty universally readable. When you are talking about people from different countries with various access to programs.  Though Calibre is probably available everywhere now, PDF readers have been around a lot longer

I only have the "cleaned up" versin in mobi.  However, from the AN at the beginning? There are only 2 parts that were changed.  So maybe read the fanfic version and keep an eye on the AN's at the top to see where she changed things.  She says she will put a notice at the top of the chapter.  It will likely just be a more lemony lemon sort of thing.  As I don't care whether they get really graphic or not (I have a good imagination) it probably wouldn't bother me to read the cleaner version.  ;D

Give me PDF's anytime. all my hardware is Apple and though epubs reads fine on iBooks, I use Kindle for ipad for most of my fanfiction and as such PDF's or mobi read better. But when it comes to reading stuff on my laptop then PDFs are the all round best option.

When I was asking about what to read from the bottom of my TBR, Betty Smith's The Gentleman From Washington State was highly rec'd. I was wondering if anyone has read the P2P version as well? I'm trying to decide which way to read it first since I have both. (Mary Whitney - A Political Affair). Thanks!

LOL! I don't mind the "damn brown covers" because I usually don't want people to see what I am reading.  But when you called it that, my mind, of course, went to the gutter and the brown wrappers they used to deliver magazines like Playboy and Penthouse in  :D :D :D :D :D
