  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
Thread #4 - We are crazy talkers here!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

Side question. I've read quite a few fics that say "all of the sudden". Is this a phrase I don't know? I would have thought you'd write "all of a sudden" or better yet, rephrase and use "suddenly." IDK why this bugs the heck out of me, but it does. Not as much as when someone uses conscious instead of conscience, but almost. Just curious.

Americans don't typically shave the hair on the lower arms. But I know some cultures that do. I have on occasion because it gets dark if I'm not in the sun enough. Mostly though just driving around lightens it enough thank goodness.

But I totally got your confusion on this.  ;)

Well, rumour has it that American women shave EVERYWHERE except the head  :D
I learned at school in biology that shaving your armpits is not good and when I was a teenager the girly magazines told us that bleaching your leghair is better than shaving  :)

My hubby doesn't care. He thinks it funny when I shave but doesn't think it's necessary. "Why should you? They belong to you like everything else..."  ;)

I defiantly shuttered all of the sudden when you mentioned this.  It doesn't bare thinking about whilst you are dinning.   :D

I've always been under the impression that mainland Europe is much less bothered by superfluous hair than we are in the UK. I remember the furore caused once because Julia Roberts turned up to a UK film premier with hairy underarms, the papers went into a tail spin and blamed it on the fact she was dating some 'French guy' at the time, personally? I just think she forgot (I'm sure an assistant is unemployed somewhere for not reminding her!)

I'm OCD when it comes to excess hair. I epilate legs and under arms and 'Hollywood' (Playboy) wax the more 'sensitive' areas.

Unlike most American women, I'm not bothered by my own hair. TMI Warning! I fluctuate between letting everything grow naturally (with some trimming) and waxing. I usually can't be bothered, but my hair is also light in coverage and thin. Then I'll feel like a change and pull out my wax machine and take most everything away. I've definitely gotten judgmental looks here when I leave things au naturel and wear a tank top or something similar. My sister and mother definitely make fun of me, but they're also a little jealous as they are both hairier than me. At least that's what I tell myself.  :D

Okay, I've got to go now and, may be patchy for a couple of weeks as we set off on holiday in the morning.

Let's hope there is another heatwave!

Take care everyone.   :-*

I keep hearing that but I think this new wave actually is not really painful. If you wax then this is no more painful than that.. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login (this is the one I have and it changed my life)

It is mostly cultural.  I hate nylons so if I shave I don't need to wear them.  The underarms?  I thought it was a odor thing growing up. But really it's a looks hippie if you don't.  I guess the connotation is that you aren't as clean or smell bad if you don't.  But really? I don't shave as much during the winter.  No one sees & my husband doesn't really care. ;)

I really think writers read the incorrect usage and think "oh! That's what it's supposed to be"  Or they talk that way.  They don't teach proper English anymore.  Or even proper American. LOL!

Then you see a rash of misusage. Okay was that a word? I may have started a whole new misusage of words. :D :D :D

It's confusing for me, because I'm often unsure if some phrase is incorrect or not.
On the other hand, things like their/there/they're etc drive me crazy because it's something we learned over and over and over at school.
My son had his first real Grammar lessons for English last school year and had to learn the different meanings etc. But perhaps it's easier for foreigners because we learn the vocabulary more visual, reading and memorizing the words and their meanings while those with English as a mothertongue speak the words first and learn to write them later...

That is probably correct.  And if they learn it verbally incorrectly, they will probably never learn it correctly unless they really want to.  ;D

Ella, that made me laugh!  And when you mentioned moaning I remembered the whole "millimeters millimeters millimeters" thing and now I can't stop laughing.   I told my husband about the book reader doing that and he thought it was hilarious too.

Thank you for reminding me! This is from Blood and Glory by Drotuno.

"Mm-mm-mm," she groaned, shaking her head.     You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
