  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
Thread #4 - We are crazy talkers here!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

Well...you're the one who disappeared for months on end with nary a word so that you could play with Pyrenees goat farmers...

:iagree: :iagree: :iagree: with both. I keep praying that You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login will complete.

I liked The Real Life of E A Masen so much that...I am reading a WIP!  :o

Vancouver-Canuck-Girl's You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login . It has the same charm and humour as Real Life - it could almost be a prequel, but it definitely is a completely different story. It has at least one actual Laugh-Out-Loud moment in every chapter and some great one-liners.

I'm following Awkwardly and I'll have to check out Midnight Desire...As long as it doesn't get me committed to a home for the insane...

I'm reading Power Tools and Pearls as suggested earlier and I must say, my flat in in need of some serious 'renovations'...

Yeah but adding from Flag means you have to manual fill in all your customised column, type of Edward (Mobward, actorward etc), type of Bella, Genre, Number of Chapters,  No words, summary etc etc etc....It'll be such a pain in the arse to do if FFD is down permanently  :(

This is that "metadata" stuff the Ellachanted keeps mentioning that causes me to have heart palpitations, right?

I am loving what I do with Calibre (converting real books from mobi to epub and removing DRM, and grabbing fic anthologies) but I don't do much else.

I have a million and one recently completed fics that I need to grab, but I keep procrastinating. My plan was to have a play with Calibre and figure it out - I was going to do it this weekend. Looks like I might just stick with flagging them before they all get pulled for breach being too racy or P2P!

I'm off to do my patriotic duty or "democratic privilege", as I just heard on the TV, and vote in our federal election.

The reality is that voting is compulsory here in Australia - if you are 18 and you don't vote, you get fined. This is why they have polling booths at schools - the school parent groups hold Cake Stalls and Sausage Sizzles to raise funds - and you get to buy a sausage on a piece of bread or a cupcake when you vote!  :D

*hides sledgehammer behind wall*

I need some renovations too...  ;)

I read Midnight Desire years ago - it was possibly my first humorous twific. I remember thinking that she did such a great job - the characters are all completely cannon...but AH! I might even re-read it - and then read the existing chapters of the sequel.

As I was writing it I was thinking the same thing."this edward will go down."  Admit it, we're all thinking about ourselves!

Yep it is! In FFD you can customise the information Calibre stores on each fic. You can get it to sort by Character type, I just do Edward and Bella, I even have a 'flounce' column (with date) because I optimistically thought, when I first started collecting fics, that I'd be doing that, no such luck, I even have a TBR column which tell me if the fic is on my Ipad TBR or not...yeah, I flove FFN!  :'( And Ella because she's my Calibre guru  :D

Ugh - Aussie politicians are all crazy - and the crazy just gets worse during election campaigns.

I really don't even know who to vote for! For every decent thing one of them does, they do two stupid things -

I want Education and Health to be removed from political agendas but because of funding, that's never going to happen.

Current PM (Rudd) is a complete megalomaniac - he has only been back in office for a few months after his party knifed him in the back and then knifed his replacement - the Labour Party has self-destructed.

The Liberal Party is led by Abbott and, as you said - Crazy Eyes! And google "Tony Abbott Budgie Smugglers" for something you really don't want to see about your nation's leader! He's very fit - does triathlons - but unless you're built like Chris Hemsworth or Kellan Lutz, speedos should be outlawed!

Might be a case of Eeny Meeny Miney Moe when I actually get in the booth.  :-\

Talking about huge TBR lists. I'm trying to think of a way to be more 'selective(?)' about what I Calibre because really, it is getting way out of hand; almost 2500 fics in just over a year? Every single story that has been rec'd here since we started has been added, if I didn't already have it, to my Calibre. That's nuts! So I've decided not to 'collect' any stories less that 20 Chapters. If it less than 20 I just read them on FFN, love them and release them back to the mother lode! I haven't actually put this into practice yet so I wanted your opinion ladies...Does that sound 'doable', sensible? I feel I have to think up some sort of criteria on what I keep or else I'll never catch-up or get ahead of my TBR list, I'll be dead before I get to finish all these stories. The only way this ends well is if every single Twific author stopped writing fics forever!

I'd really like opinions and suggestions.  :-* I'm off to bed 02.35 GMT. I look forward to suggestions tomorrow, or, I suppose, later today i more accurate   :)

I've only used calibre to convert books. Last weekend, i learned to change the metadata(?) which was simply to rename the book title and insert the author so it will help me store/search thm better.

Astro sending me complete contest anthologies made me think i can combine several installments of 1 book into just one, again for easier reading/searching...of course i couldn't do it. Also in that metadata tab is combine (if my spotty memory serves me right). So i tried selecting part 1 and 2 and combine them, electing to delete the other book after combining.  Opened the "combined" and nothing. Just saw part 2 gone fom the library. Part 1, the supposedly surving combined one, is unchanged. Help pls!

Can we really do that in calibre?
1. Select several books and combine them in 1?
2. How do we combine them in sequence? Will i have to change the metadata first so it says 1,2,3,4  etc and calibre will automatically sort it according to file name so it will combine/merge it in correct order?

Thanks in advance for helping me  :)

Does that sound 'doable', sensible?

Is anything about my twific addiction doable, sensible?

I think that ship sailed a loooooong time ago for me!  ;)

Let's not even get me started on my addiction to the Pretty because it's just gotten completely out of hand this week.

Hmmm - out of hand probably isn't the correct phrase, seeing as my hand has been busy!!!

I am in the same quandary. Have not even used calibre to download, just downloaded those that were rec'd or looked interesting to me based on the summary... And i still have over 1,500. I have stopped downloading one shots and read it in ffn. I will only download it if i liked it. Its great that astro sent me compilations of the contests so i didn't have too many titles, they're all neatly in 1 book.  :)

I have opted to read first the shorter ones, those less than 500 pages. I remove more titles from my list faster this way.

When i get the time, i will start reading the summaries again and decide which ones to delete to prune it down. However, with the girls here reading so fast, resulting in several recs daily, i am not optimistic that i can significantly bring down my numbers... This is for fanfics only, i have about 2,000 real books to sift through as well.

On the bright side, i will likely have much to read to occupy me during my retirement 16yrs from now.  :D

I am not the Calibre expert by any means, so I might be completely wrong, but this is what I'm thinking...

The Anthology thingy grabs all the fics from one profile in the order that they are published. What I would do is use the epub merge thingy that someone else mentioned a few weeks back.

Give me a minute and I'll go searching for that post...

With the FanficDownloader plugin for Calibre, if you choose the "Get story URLs to download from webpage" option, and put in the profile link for the contest, you will be given the option of "Individual books" or "Anthology epub".  The Anthology epub option puts them all in to one epub file.  I don't know if this is a newer option on the fanfic downloader plugin because I downloaded it recently.

Alternatively, I miss read your post and was trying to figure out how to put all the summer contests into one file, and found the "EpubMerge" plugin, and it will merge files together.  I plan to use this to attach outtakes to the end of stories so I don't have to go hunt for them on my ereader.

A little job I've been thinking of doing is getting all the one shots of authors that I really like together and merging those as an anthology of sorts. I'll need to have a think as to how to do this.

I do not miss the days of cutting and pasting every chapter of every fic into word and then converting into pdf.

You probably never thought you'd hear this from me, but...
