Thread #4 - We are crazy talkers here!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

After reading and enjoying Dear Mr. Masen I decided to try out some vampward so I'm now reading Creature of Habit by EZrocksangel.     This is great so far!   Forgot how much I love vampward. ;-)

I couldn't get into it and put it aside. I planned to give it one more time, but that was months ago. Lost without trace on my "To-Finish"-list.  ;)

I was bored so I had a look.  I don't get the point of it.  I am apparently a warrior now

:iagree: I tried it a few days ago and leveled up and did one of the quests, but it got boring after a while. And I was to chicken to attack Mr. Admin...  :sign0024:

I'm reading AWTFA at the moment and flove it! This is one for my ATF-list. YAY!

I have no idea what to read after this. Maybe Written In The Stars or I give counselor a new try. I started Roar Like A Lion, but couldn't get into it. I'd love to read her newest fic - makes a good impression to me, but it's still a WIP.

And I'm re-organizing my Calibre. Creating separate libraries. Moving them to different clouds with more space than dropbox. Updating metadata with pages and chapters and so on. It's a lot of work and takes a lot of time (uploading 3000 fics to a cloud drags on), but I like it! Only hubs is not amused because I block the PC so much at the moment.

Speaking from experience, be careful moving your library around lol. I did something to completely f*ck my entire system up the other day when I was trying to move the library location to dropbox....im thinking I should have done as Ella suggested and move the location via calibre vs through explorer. *Shrugs* I still have no idea what went wrong and why I could not, for the life of me, fix the issue. I tried everything but finally gave up this evening and started over.

So, long story short, be careful lol

And what clouds are you using? I have about the same amount of fics as you and once I get my library mess sorted out I need to redo all of the clouds.

Yeah, I followed your odyssey! Horrible! I hope everything will fall into place for you and your Calibre!
But I used the function to create a new library in Calibre from the beginning. I'm always very very careful by nature, because I hate messing something up. So, I search the net and read until I think I'm ready to do something.  :D

I use dropbox at the moment for my fics in PDF (I have every epub also saved as PDF).
I'm splitting my Calibre library in Original Fiction and Twilight Fanfiction. My Originial fiction collection stays on my PC harddrive and I'm in the process of moving my Fanfiction collection in Calibre to skydrive.com (7 GB). My dropbox is nearly full though, so I plan to move the PDFs to copy.com (15 GB there?).
And I have 15 GB on Google Drive, but Google Drive is not suitable with Calibre, so I save this space for later if I need to move my PDFs again.

I agree with Lucy, I tried to move the Calibre library folders to organise them on my computer. I never moved them from the section where Calibre had put them, just moved them all into one folder but when I went into Calibre I couldn't access them.  Calibre said they were gone. I've been wondering if the answer is the virtual library instead of several actual libraries. So one main Calibre library with lots of virtual libraries. Anyone tried this?

About Dropbox, are all clouds like this?  I joined it because I thought my fics would be safe floating around in cyberspace.  In reality I now have another folder for Dropbox and all the fics copied on there.  So now I have the original download of a fic, the Calibre folder with it in and the Dropbox folder with it in. So 3 lots of the same thing for every fic.  I'm beginning to think the only way to save space and clear out my computer is to put all the fics on a memory card or disc.

Calibre knows where your library is, because you tell the program where to put it while installing. So, if you change the directory outside of Calibre, Calibre can't access it anymore, because it searches only the original directory. And Calibre is one accurate bit...  ;) Putting all in one folder outside of Calibre is too much.
If you use the create new library function in Calibre there shouldn't be a problem. At least it seems to work for me.

I didn't use the virtual library function yet, because my purpose were different saving directories for different parts of my Calibre library (Original fiction -> PC; fanfiction -> cloud). With the virtual library you only create different libraries for viewing in Calibre. The directory stays the same for all documents in Calibre.
The virtual libraries are useful for filtering your fics more easily. F.e. you create one for each genre or one for each -ward.

Again sorry for my loss of words and fussiness when it comes to tech talk.

Splitting my calibre library saves place for me because before everything was on my PC drive. Now at least my Calibre fanfiction epubs are in a cloud.
But additionally I have the original downloads via flagfic saved on my PC drive as epub and PDFs and on an external hard drive. It takes a lot of space, but as I said: I don't want to lose one single file and my devices are big enough at the moment.

A memory card is a good idea if I need it some day.

I saw the Dior print ad in person, I wasn't able to get a picture cause I was leaving the store and it would have been awkward with the stroller and security guard right there (the ones online are better anyway) but it exists.

Agreed, and I should have remembered that and moved in calibre first...but I wasn't thinking and just moved it all willy nilly

And then? When I realized what I did and tried to move the folder back to the original location, Calibre won't recognize that anymore.

Yesterday I uninstalled the software, wanting to just make a clean start and start fresh but.....after I uninstalled and then reinstalled, all of my info for my other library was there and I still couldn't import. So I created a new library, new location, told calibre where to look and added all files that way but now....it's saying there are 3100 duplicates found. So now I'm thinking that Calibre is somehow seeing all of my books and therefore my additions are all dups, but I cannot see them?

I swear to god, the Tech gods are just trying to make me lose my mind. Because at this point, I just have no idea what to do. Uninstalling didn't work...nothing has.

ETA: I cancelled the dup add and now everything is there! I seem to have an extra 200 fics so I'll need to run a dup check and then really go through everything later to be sure but MAYBE I've fixed the issue

I have everything backed up to a flash drive (actually about 4 flash drives right now because of all this mess, but once I get it sorted it, I'll delete all but 1 back up on flash and 1 on harddrive)
There are so many copies of my library everywhere, it's so disorganized right now and it's driving me nuts lol. I use the clouds as a backup and as a means to access my library when I'm not on wifi to use the calibre app.

You know me, I love non canon fics.  :)

But sometimes I wonder what the authors are thinking.
Look at that charming summary:

Quote
Evil Takes Over
Author: Twilightvamp0 PM
Edward raped Bella. Victoria changes Bella. The wolves kill Victoria and Charlie. Bella kills the imprints, starts drinking human blood, and join Marias army.
Rated: Fiction M - English - Angst/Drama - Bella & Garrett - Chapters: 8 - Words: 7,357 - Reviews: 28 - Favs: 101 - Follows: 65 - Updated: 02-18-11 - Published: 02-13-11 - id: 6742647

Is it a story to cry or laugh about?

 :D :D :D :D :D

I won't link it. It's a WIP and not updated for 2 years, so... just no.

Do I remember you guys mentioning that you hang out on Facebook too?   When the site was down the other day I was wondering if there was a backup plan for our "book club" in case the site went down for an extended amount of time.       :D

Have any of you read the followup books for On Dublin Street or The Mighty Storm.   How about the most recent Lux book?   I've got all 3 of those and have been thinking I should start one of them since I liked the ones that went before them A LOT, but I can't seem to bring myself away from my fics lately...

I flounced The Mighty Storm (dude is in a band, right?) about 25% of the way through (I...um...may have changed it to a twific via Word). It may have been a victim of wrong fic/book, wrong time, I don't know but I was bored with it.
