  • Hi! I'm Ellachanted and I'm a fanfic-oholic.
Thread #4 - We are crazy talkers here!

ADULT DISCUSSION HERE, SO TRY TO KEEP IT CLEAN! UM NO, WAIT! IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED, LOOK AWAY NOW!

This is the new thread as the other was sooo long and had lots of pages. Continuation of our wonderful discussions on Twilight Fanfiction, Books, and Life in general.  But mostly Twilight fanfics... and life stuff that will get me a NOT ALLOWED statement.

Okay, here is a place to discuss what you are reading, ask for recommendations and complain about the writing.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

Because we know drypen's watching

I agree with all of you as i only do the same thing in GR. It does help me keep track of what i've read and my rating for it so i can remember how much i liked a book or not. To be honest, it helps me remember what the story is about bec. if i didn't rate it a 5, i wouldn't recall  ;D. I've learned not to tag "want to read". Right now, it's only at 124 so i am not too "stressed" when i go there. I definitely have more than a thousand in my ipad library i haven't read, not even counting the fanfics. As we all have said, too many books/fics to read, too little time  :P

Off to see what changed in GR....

They are now deleting, with no warning, any reviews and shelves that are decided to not be about the book, but the author. So, if an author harasses a reviewer over a less than glowing review, and that reviewer puts them onto a shelf titled "due to author", that shelf and any comments will be deleted. If an author spams a bunch of forums, and gets shelved as "spammer", that shelf gets deleted.

That was gonna be next on my list of fics to check, hopefully this is it!

Am I gonna get spanked, bringing up the non-canon in the regular thread? :-[

Obviously my bad influence.  ^-^

What are you in the mood for? Humor, Tragedy, Angst, Pure Fluff?

Are you strictly canon?

You really do learn something new every day... Here's what i learned and it works!

Tip: For those wanting to save all their books/reviews before they're deleted, or simply in preparation for leaving, you can export a .CSV file.

Go to "My Books". On the left side is as list of links. Click on "import/export". On the new page, upper right, is the link to export to a .CSV file. (Yes, your whole review IS in the .CSV file)

Thanks for pointing me to this particular page, Matron!

Matron, if you're talking about their new "policy" which basically discredits their mission statement that goodreads is for readers, then I understand your anger.  I wasn't very active in the social aspect of gr, and I only used it to organize my books so I wasn't directly affected by the change, but I've already left the site.  I have zero patience for that type of censoring or pandering to a small minded and hypocritical

group of people.

This why I only use the "star" system on GR and review books properly on Amazon.
It was only last month that Judyann McCole (aka jannmccole), she was getting a load of harassment about her book You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login that she was going to remove it from all sites that sold it.  :(
Apparently once the bullies realized that she was also a fanfic writer they started harassing her about that so she now only updates her fics via her blog.

I mean seriously!! If you don't like a book and you're adamant on leaving a review - leave a review saying what you didn't like about the book, but don't make the review personal as there's no need for it. >:( :(
These authors no matter how good or bad they are, are releasing books for reading pleasure.    :)

Okay rant over. :P

What do you mean I don't sound like I'm from Croyden.  :P :D :D
I'm gonna take that as a compliment as I quite like her hubby Aaron he's got that geeky look going on.  ;)
Mind you, I wouldn't be filming 50 though I'd rather being acting it out.  :P :P

What's wrong with people? Only because you can say your opinion now everywhere for everyone to read doesn't mean you should give your opinion on everything, especially when you know nothing about the subject!

Only because someone wrotes fanfiction doesn't mean he/she can't write other books as well. And some fanfic writers are awsome authors! And especially in the Twilight fandom are so many stories that would deserve being published as their own book. A lot of AH fanfics have next to nothing in common with Twilight, except the use of the characters, but lets be honest, Stephenie Meyer didn't invent the wheel with her characters either!

People behave like fanfiction is some dirty secret... kind of like when an actress becomes famous and suddenly someone discovers she made nudie pics when she was younger... lol

Fanfiction doesn't harm anyone, it's a great way to explore your creativity, to get in contact with other writers and readers.

And when a story is good enough that someone thinks it worthy of publishing, would any of you decline?
I sure would not, it would be a great step in the right direction...

I agree.  I would be interested to see how many of these peeps protesting and being horrible to ff authors actually write, I also think jealousy plays about.

Ahh well, I'm not a good one to rec canon....the last one I read was Higher by Sexylexicullen (I liked it but others did not). Oh and I read and LOVED this one by Livie79....but  it's a straight up horror/tragedy so I'm thinking it won't be your cuppa tea lol

I don't really know what to think. It seems to be scenes ripped out, not the plot itself. But why would a former fanfic writer herself steal scenes from another fanfic, she has to know a ton of her target audience would have read the fanfic.

I don't know her and haven't read any of her stuff that I know of.  What fanfics did she write?

I do know this has happened before.  Suzie55 had her  Welcome to Paradise stolen and made into a real book that sold on Amazon.  She had a big hassle getting it off and stopping  the publishing.   It is sad.  Though in this case, it makes me wonder what else she stole...

Mary Elizabeth just left a review on Amazon.

I think Shey Stahl was jaydmommy? She wrote Lapped Traffic, most of her pubbed books were P2P, and I read somewhere, she ripped a sex scene from a hunterhunting fic.

That doesn't surprise me.  I noticed one of her stories was about a hockey player....  It looked a little familiar.  I have Lapped Traffic on PDF, but I haven't read it yet....

Just curious...  for those of you talking about leaving reviews at Amazon vs using Goodreads.    I saw someone mention that Goodreads wasn't private enough.   If you set it up with an anonymous email address and don't add people to your friends list, then it's private right?   I'm curious because i like to have my reviews not displayed to the whole world. :)

I used to post reviews on Amazon but then I realized that people could click on my name and see things I'd purchased and other book reviews I'd left.  I didn't like having that much info out there.   I wish there was a way that I could easily post anonymous reviews at Amazon.
