Everyone is entitled to an opinion, so please play nice

The AG & Icy drama was intense and it looks like there is yet another blow up (in this case fair enough).  I have to say that on some members of the Twi community are right ...... slagging of other each other and authors with real vitriol.  You don't seem to get any of this drama in other of the fandoms.  :o

Wasn't there a Harry Potter writer who got a lot of bad reviews after publishing her fanfics as novels? Yeah, I just looked it up, Cassandra Clare and her Mortal Instruments was a HP fic first...

I think its that much more in the Twilight fandom because you can actually write new stuff around the characters. Any AH novel has nothing in common with Twilight and especially in Dusty I think they don't even look like the original characters anymore...

Don't get me wrong, I really hate that she plagiarized Dusty and turned it into a novel!

BUT, as far as I know, there is not much anyone can do about this, legally.

Because, fanfiction is not able to be copyrighted!

The only one who could do something would be Stephenie Meyer, but she didn't step up as Fifty was published, so I doubt she cares. She owns the characters, so ultimatly she owns every Fanfiction there written. The plot is not copyrightable.

So, the real authors can cry all they want, we can leave nasty reviews all we want, she could get away with it, selling even more books by getting everyone interested.  >:(

I don't like that, but this is the law as I know momentarily.

On the other hand it is that the legal state that allows us to copy, download and share every fanfic we want, because the authors have no right to them.

I really hope she goes down, when there is no law protecting the writers, there should be morals.  >:(

You are right! I had forgotten about Cassandra Clare but I still think you get more bitachness in the Twi fandom.  Most of the authors I used to talk to from Twi have left twitter because they were getting hassled about stuff.

I'm not really sure if it's the fandom per se, or just a sign of the times - where people feel that they can hide behind the anonymity a computer provides, and also where they feel that they can condemn and criticise and take out their issues on innocent bystanders around them.

Go back 20 or even 10 years ago. If you read a book and didn't like it, what did you do? Tell your friends that it was crap and give it away, or write a scathing review, condemning not only the writing, but also the author personally, threatening death to them and their family members, print it, copy it and mail it to every person that you had ever encountered in your life, along with a few spare copies for them to hand out to their friends?

If I do something at work that a parent takes offence to, they used to stand out in the car park, or meet friends for a coffee and have their whinge and bitch - now it's posted on facebook and commented on by people all over the world - who have only read their version of events - with lots of lovely advice like "go up to the school and tear them a new one" or "sue the bitch and get her fired", or my personal favourite: "Find out where that slut lives and pay her a visit - with some lighter fluid and a box of matches. Then she'll learn about burning!". (That was because one of my teachers - not even me! - had made the kid sit out because he didn't have his hat for sport. We have a no hat-no play policy because Queensland is the skin cancer capital of the world.)

So, I do tend to think that this sort of nastiness exists everywhere now, as we lose socialisation skills and communicate more via the web.

Perhaps it's just a more concentrated dose via the fandom.

Wow, I can't believe parents (or their friends) say those things to you or about you on facebook.  That is just wrong.

I think you are right that now days people like the ability to hide behind a computer and say things they wouldn't normally say.  There is a certain social media mindset, that if something gets enough likes, shares, retweets, etc. it will make you famous or something.  I often stop myself before I post something to facebook, and question why I want to post it, if its to get attention for me, or to share the story/photo with my friends and family.

Add in the fact that this fandom is huge and composed mostly of women? We can be downright bitches at times (not calling anyone here that, I think this group is the exception). Starting in grade school and on up, we have that pack mentality and man. We can be vicious. While I don't think it's a good thing and I don't want to be involved in the drama (I sure don't mind watching it happen though) I am not surprised that it goes on.

That's not to say that this current situation isn't justified. It's sad that someone steals the hard work of others and then tries to profit from it. It's sickening and probably causes a lot of our good authors to ditch the fandom....and I cant blame for doing it.like Anchalee said, there doesnt seem much they can do in retaliation short of spending the cash for an attorney (which they may not have....I wouldn't), which is just bull shit so I can understand how some would be discouraged and take off.

I really hope that I didn't offend anyone...

I was going to say that it was Mary Elizabeth that wanted to publish, but maybe I'm confused - that does happen from time to time.  ;D :D

Hmmm - AG still has a You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login. Was it her and Icy that had the big smackdown when Icy did the P2P with MotU/FSoG?

Or maybe it just stems from You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login- remember when the Literary Union (or whatever they were called - the Sonic the Hedgehog loving team that tried to get all twifics removed?) were on a rampage?

Nope - I think I was right the first time - You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

I'm a terrible gossip! Not that I gossip much - I mean that I'm terrible at it because I seem to miss all the drama and then can't remember what happened anyway!  :-[

This was probably because it was 2 am when I read that but Im still confused? So someone posted AG's IP addy and she got pissed (understandably) , gave the fandom the finger and left? Or was there more to it than that (did I read something about that her posted IP addy lead some to believe she wasn't who she said?)? I just know before I left the fandom, she was active and popular but when I came back she was gone and no one mentioned her.

ETA...sigh...more auto corrects

In this instance with Stahl maintaining her innocence, it is possible it won’t be taken down until legal action does occur.  For the fan fiction authors, given that their work is not registered with the US Copyright office, they’d only be entitled to whatever the text has earned so far.  If they had registered the copyright, they would be entitled to treble damages.

There is some copyright protection from plagiarism in that this story is unique and if the names are changed, SM would not have a leg to stand on if she sued.  Similar to MoTU. While the character names are Edward and Bella, they are fanfics with no copyright protection per se.  As soon as you change the names? An all human fic stands on it's own.

But they would need to hire a lawyer.  She appears to only be charging 99 cents on Amazon for this story.  It may not be worth it.

And you technically have copyright protection at the moment you write it. So publishing a fanfic on ffnet is a great copyright protection in a way. You have proof you wrote it and proof it was "published" on a certain date. Twilight fanfic is a little weird in that the original characters are vampires. And not your standard vampires.  So a fanfic with SM's vamps could never be published with just name changes.  But make them human? It's a whole different story.  Does this make sense? It's early, I'm half asleep.  ;)

I wouldn't give a burglar my TV if they broke into my house (unless he was hot and naked  :P), so why should I give Shey Stahl anything in return whether it only cost me 77p or £77. >:(

Loopy, haven't you had any outside/smashing through glass doors sex this week? Let's talk about so that my head doesn't explode! You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
No, there's been no more glass in my ass this week.  :D
The most exciting thing to happen to me in the past few days was my neighbours 20 year old Grandson building the goats a new out house with his friend, and even though it was rainy they still took their tops off for my viewing pleasure.
Of course I would never perv on such young guys. :sign0103: :sign0103: :040: :sign0151:

Right my lovelies I'm going as the hubby has just got home after being away for the weekend with Saxon and I think once Saxon's in bed he deserves a nice warm welcome.  >:D >:D :P :P
