If you scroll up a few posts, fanficgirl has posted some links to discussions of top 10 or top 3 fics.  Most will be E/B stories.

Do you have a specific genre you like?  That might help us identify fics to rec.  I tend to like sci-fi stories so some of my favorites are Written in the Stars by Lissa Bryan and Elemental by TallulahBelle; so it might help to give us a few of the stories you like.

oh tough call. both of those are really good.

I saw this post earlier when I was on the phone to Marcus and told him what you said, he was curious so I emailed Dusty to him. I wonder if I keep nagging I can get the rest of the boys to read it and I'll let you know what they think of it.  ;)
Well, now that's not something you hear everyday!  "I'm going to get M&S to read a fic!"    Wow, please keep us posted.   I think they actually referenced more than one if their songs in the fic...  or was it the Avett Brothers I'm thinking of on the other one?

I flove Blank White Page so much! I love Mumford full stop but that song? It's Mother's Milk to me......I'm going to read Innocents too, just to see; even though I tend not to read published fics if I've already read the fanfiction, but this? Yeah, this is going to be the exception to the rule. :P

Written In The Star took some getting use to
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
but once you stop thinking Twilight and just go where the author takes you, it shapes up to be one of the best stories in the fandom; brilliant use of imagination and imagery.

I second Loopy Girl's big up of Lordes' Pure Heroine. Pure summer, totally Dustyesque  :D
One of the best stories in the fandom? Whaaat? I had no idea you felt so strongly about that one.   I just bumped it up on my list even further.  ;-)       Would you believe I've only ever heard her song, Royals?   I almost never listen to the radio but loved Royals the second I heard it.  I'll have to check out her other stuff.

Ok, I am 85% finished with Me Before You by JoJo Moyes and it's rocking my world...    I really really hope it doesn't fizzle at the end.

Yeah I do, mainly because the author took a chance and wrote a story which went against expectations, without upsetting the status quo; she gave us all the elements the majority of twific readers want in a story but gave it to us is a fresh, unexpected package. Normally the only way to really do this now, after, what? 6-7years of Twifics? Is to take a story to an extreme most readers don't like, because, after all let's face it, almost every storyline has been done to death, sometimes done really well, sometimes just...to death. I think Written is an really good example of how to tread a well worn road in new shoes and discover unseen sights.

Ooo please let me know how you like Me Before You! I read it last week and enjoyed it up until the epilogue. I have a lot of feelings about that book.

While I'm talking about books, I have another tiny rant: in some of the books I've read lately it's really apparent to know which authors are self published. I love that it's so easy to share their stories with the world, without having to go through a big publishing house to distribute the books, but it seems like many of them could do with more editing before the books are published. There were a few I read that felt more like I was reading fanfiction with the way details are set up and presented, not to mention the grammar  :-\  I don't pay for fanfiction and can definitely relate to the angry reviews I see on amazon and goodreads wondering why they paid for whichever book.

And late response, the character from the Colleen Hoover novel that people were using as an example of on when boys are scary and you should be running for your life, was Dean Holder from Hopeless. I didn't get the creepy vibe from him, except for when he followed her out to the parking lot and asked who she was. Obviously she was unsettled, but he later apologized and explained himself.  Then goes on to think about what a creep he probably seemed like in the book with his point of view, Losing Hope.

I just got done reading the Seven Signs trilogy from Nora Roberts. I enjoyed them and liked how she managed to drag all the suspense out among three books but the ending was a little meh. So much build up and not enough execution. I'd never read any of Nora Robert's novels, but I'm slowly making my way through her library. Maybe one day I'll work up the nerve to read the In Death series, although I don't know if I want to go down that road. I need complete stories  :P

Supercreep - If you want a recommendation for one of Nora's books, definitely read High Noon.  Fantastic book.   You might also want to hang out at InDeath.net and go through the Nora Forum for recommendations on some of her other stand alones and see how/what people recommend.  I never read Nora as Nora until a couple of years after I started reading the InDeath series.

Lol, don't ask me how I got Marcus to agree to it -mind you he owes me for making me read "The Virgin Suicides" last year.  :D :D
I was talking to Ted on Skype last night and was telling him about getting Marcus to read Dusty and I think I'm on the verge of getting him to agree to reading it as well, a bit more nagging convincing and he'll cave soon.  >:D >:D :D :D
Mrs Fassy is right they reference M&S as they have big love for them.  :)

TBH, I probably wouldn't of thought to have bought Lordes' album if it wasn't for my daughter telling me she is kind of in the same vein as Lana Del Rey (who I also love).
Go to YouTube and listen to Buzzcut Season - reminds me the most of Dusty and you get the feel of the rest of the album.  :D

I hear ya sister! Sh!t as much as Im loving this series it does feel like once I'm finally caught up I'm then going to have to go through the yearly book cycle. I'm NOT GOOD AT WIP, regardless of the format.  Prime example, George R R Martin and his runting Songs of Fire and Ice series *coughmofocough* I really, really, really, strongly dislike (apparently I use the word 'hate' too easily) that guy right now! :violent-smiley-007: You are not allowed to view links. demaris - unless you're really anxious to reread 45 books in one year, it really isn't necessary.  If you find yourself in the middle of an InDeath withdrawal between new books, just read favorite sections.   The next book is due in September (Festive).  The one after that is in February and believe it or not I think that's the one entitled Obsessive In Death.  After that is one novel and one short story that come out between September and December.  There is no short story this year.  She's trying to finish the O'Dwyer trilogy and book three is falling into the space that the short usually goes in.

Back when I read Slammed, I hadn't heard of the Avett Brothers yet...   this has me wanting to read it again.    You've definitely got me interested in Written in the Stars again!   I just started that other one you recommended...  Youth Without Age and Life Without Death.   I have no idea what to expect because the summary line didn't give much away.   I've got to quit reading it and comparing it to the lyrical writing of Yellowglue!   It got mentioned when we were talking about her so I keep finding myself thinking it seems a little disjointed compared to YG's beautiful words.   I'm still on Chapter 1, will report back later.

What's everybody else reading?    Read anything recently that we all need to add to our list?  Fic and nonfics too!

When it comes to reading the In Death books, I feel like even though it's a series, you can read them individually. I read them all out of order, cause I got them from libraries and used books stores (I was 15 when I started reading the series, so I read the books where I found them). I kept reading them because I loved them, and while some things might make more sense if you read them in order, I feel like Roberts (Robb, whatever) explains whatever needs explaining well enough that you can read the story and understand it just fine without the entire back story.

And Demaris, Ruth is right. You don't have to keep re-reading the series from the beginning ever 5-7 months. Just nit-pick. I do that. I get to thinking about a particular part of a story and go back and read that part. Course, I usually end up reading all the way through to the end from that part, but..... oh well.

I do that a lot with fanfiction and other books, too.

Now, back to Colleen Hoover's "Hopeless" if you look at the ratings on the Goodreads page for that book the very top review is what I'm referring to. It's this list of all the things people are swooning over in new adult literature. Where the bad boy is actually a giant creeper and so many people are romanticizing these characters. I don't think we read the same book, me and that reviewer. I could go on a whole tirade over how men are usually very gross and annoying but I shouldn't have to with the recent wave of #YesAllWomen, I feel like Dean holder's character was a typical arrogant teenage boy. Not ever going to condone the behavior of a teenage boy, but the most offensive thing he did was accost Sky in the parking lot because he thought she was someone he knew. If you wanna talk about romanticizing YA literature? Edward Cullen was the creepiest dude ever!!! Which is why I had such issues with canon Edward, SO CREEPY sneaking in and watching Bella while she's sleeping.

And I just found more examples of things that irritate me in published novels. We're on the topic of music in fiction, and I don't mind a few mentions thrown in here and there for good reference. I'm in the middle of a Nora Roberts novel and this is how she brings up most music in her stories:
Quote
The music had changed again. When his mind cleared enough for him to tune in to it, he recognized Paul Simon’s clever twists of lyrics and melody.

See I don't really think anything of it. Just reads like a description of what's on the radio.

Now here's some examples from a book called The Secret of Ella and Micah
Quote
  • The soft tune of Pink’s “Funhouse” sings underneath the trash bag—my unknown ID ringtone
  • The air conditioner is turned up as high as it will go and “Shake it Out” by Florence + The Machine plays from the speakers.
  • I step out into the cool breeze. Rise Against “Like an Angel” blasts from the speakers next door.
  • She lies on the bed next to me and we stare at the Chevelle poster on my ceiling.

Now I just feel like I'm reading something that MTV is pushing on me. There's SO many books I've read recently that are like that, one of the books I read even had the playlist at the beginning. Is it just me is that too descriptive? These authors are also the kind that will spend an entire paragraph detailing the outfits of their characters. I really don't care what brand of shoes they're wearing or the cut of their dress!

I don't mind the occasional mention of a song, but some just go too crazy with it... and totally agree with you about the clothing brands and super detailed outfit descriptions being annoying.  Seems like I see that more and more often in YA books.

About the book, Me Before You...

Cattybratty - a lot of people seem to start in the middle of the series.   I first started reading them 11 years ago when someone at work was trying to get me started on the series.  I borrowed Purity and it sat on top of my stereo for 4 months before I actually started reading.  I was so hooked it was pathetic.   I had surgery scheduled for October of 2003 and picked up the first 5 to get me through my recuperation period.   At Christmas I got $150 in gift cards and money and used it all to get caught up to whatever the latest book was.  These days a friend and I take turns buying the latest book and then I end up with it to keep.  If I don't lay a claim to it, it would end up on her internet book swap so why waste the time putting it on the list?  The only one I don't own (and no I don't own a kindle) is I think Indulgence.   Neither of us had extra money at the time and we both got it from the library - me in hardcover and her on audio.  The only one I haven't finished is Fantasy - I quit halfway thru it - although conversations in the first part of the book (especially between Eve and Peabody were hysterical - I was on the phone one day with Stephanie Losleben/lostluggage/solostintwilight and I had her in giggles reading it to her).

I started with book 2 and went from there. I had been collecting the books for years, but finally gave up on ever finding book 1 anywhere and went ahead and read them. I didn't find book 1 until at least 10 or more were out, so I never got to see the initial meeting, where Roarke's button came from, all that jazz.

  • I tried to resist the dark side, but they offered me cookies, kool aide, and pierced c*cks, so I caved.

It was like six or seven years ago for me. I was bored with what I was reading and browsing the library for something new. The books some how manages to catch my eye from the top shelf (like a foot and a half above my head). The earliest one they had at that moment was Visions, so I picked it up thinking, 'what the hell', and instantly got hooked. Read 'em all out of order except for once I got Innocence. Then I read them all straight through (not counting the shorts). To this day, the only one I haven't read all the way through is Immortal. I finally got my hands on it after Survivor, and just couldn't get through it since I already knew how things turned out. I skimmed it to get the gist, but that was it.
