I am a real stickler for manners - I definitely see more kids start school every year with less manners! Apart from the little niceties (please, thank you, good morning), there are 2 things that really get my goat:

The other thing surprises me all the time - kids and parents will just walk into not only our main office reception area without knocking, but will also walk through it and straight into my office. Yes, my door is kept open, but I can't believe people just walk in! I mean, you wouldn't just barge into your doctor's office!

There is no excuse for not posting a quick "Thanks" - although I wonder if what I perceive as a lack of manners is actually a Generation Y thing. Perhaps it's a cultural thing. Or maybe those that are always on the take don't actually realise the efforts that everyone goes to when locating and posting a fic - if they've never reciprocated, how can they know!

No excuse - but perhaps an explanation for why they don't do it.

As for the flashy banners - sometimes I get tempted to PM a mod or MrAdmin and request that they impose a size limit. I have to keep pictures to a certain size here, but some of these banners take up half a page! And the flashing, glittery ones - sometimes it's like being at a really piss-poor rave! They could cause a seizure!!!

The banners might be a reminder that not everyone here is really over 18 (or 16? or 12?) 

And it is not everyone.  I do see some that give effusive thanks when someone finds stories they are looking for. 

I was wondering if it were a generational thing as well.  The younger generation is so used to "text-speak"  they tend to sound rude even if they don't mean to be rude. 

Though you do have more experience being around younger kids than I do, kids do seem a little ruder to me these days.  And you see it on TV.  Which may be where many of them learn how to interact.

There are a few that are sexually ambiguous - and I don't mean to sound rude, it's just that I assume everyone here is female.

I also get confused when people who are really married say that they have a cyber husband, who is actually a woman!

Maybe she is a lesbian and doesn't like to be called wifey.
