I always forget how small the UK is - I moved 4 hours away from home for University which seemed like a huge distance, but then reading fanfiction (that well-known educational resource) I see that 4 hours away is barely anything! I can't imagine having a 8 hour flight just to get to somewhere within my own country, it's mad.

The question is Astro, why were you up at 9am when you have time off? :omg: (clearly I'm extremely shocked by your early rising)

Ha I love that term - pashing.

Like I said - ignorant!  I'm sorry, it is just really hard to grasp the distances.  My Sis moved to Texas and I remember her telling me she was going to a concert in Austin.  I couldn't believe it as she had to fly there.  I was then told that the UK would fit into Texas 3 times over!  I only asked as I have  various family in Australia and my Auntie moved from Melbourne to the Gold Coast - I hadn't realised it was so big.  Thanks for the Geography lesson!

Not ignorant - there is a world-wide misconception that Australia is this tiny little Gilligan's island size country.
My dad had an agent from Georgia, US who was coming to Aust for a week with his family. There plan was to hire a car, drive from Sydney to Brisbane, meet for a day with my Dad, drive to the Great Barrier Reef, then Ayers Rock and then fly out of Melbourne.

If they didn't sleep, eat or pee, they wouldn't do it in 2 weeks! Sydney to Brisbane alone is a good 12 hour drive - 3 days if you want to do it comfortably.

And we have stretches of road where there is absolutely nothing. I sometimes have to drive to Mackay, the next city north of Rockhampton. It takes 4 hours, no stopping and travelling at 90-110km/hr-6706 the entire trip. There are no towns to drive through and nothing to see, except the occasional dead kangaroo on the side of the ride. You need to watch out for the roos - they will destroy a car if you hit one!

lol!!!

let me tell you, living at someone elses house for free is NOT free.
so much drama.
i lived over there for one year. but it was an awful situation.
i moved to 3 different families.

the first one the teenage boy my age didnt want me there, so he wouldnt speak to me. if i walked in a room he would leave.
the mother had different boyfriends, so i would be left alone a lot. they would do families outings and leave me behind.

the second family was nice, but they wanted money, 40£ per week. i didnt have that money and actually that was against the rules. only stayed there for 2 weeks. plus i was so depressed by then that the 8 year old asked me why i never smiled.

the third family was with my school teacher, she found out about my situation and invited me to her house. they were very nice at first. but the regional coordinator asked to an american boy stay there for a while until they found a new placement for him. they never did.
so it got very expensive for the couple and she started to resent me for it. her husband tried to interfere and she started getting jealous of our relationship.
he was 50 plus, but she got jealous that he would defend me. he was nice to me while she was mean.
i stayed at the last house for 7 months.

but i came back to London in 2009 and made some new memories.

That's mind-blowing!
My cousin came over here a few years ago - She wanted to see London, Scotland and Wales after here as she was never coming back - it was too cold - it was end of Spring and quite warm to me!  I remember her asking for a Bundy? in the pub.

Summer time - the sun's up at 4:45, and it was nearly 30C (86F)at 6:00am.

And my brother sent me a text at 5:50 - he is working up here at the moment and is coming over for the weekend. He needs me to buy clippers - the heat is getting to him so he wants me to cut his hair.

The last time I get his hair, he cried, I got into trouble, I cried.

That was 27 years ago.

I will be discussing 5:50am texts with him, however!

LOL - that's funny.  I once tried to cut Hubby's hair - I didn't realise you had to have the guard down - he looked like a plucked chicken!
He never complained about the price of the barber's after that.

you still have the best literature and music!

i would do it all over again. and i heard even worse stories from USA.
its just too hard living with strangers. its hard with your own family, you know?

actually those kind of internships are crazy. they send you to a family that you now nothing about. most times you have no prior contact.
and it would be better if the families were paid. that way it would be more ike a busisness deal.
this program i went the families only got some deductions on taxes and such.

my parents "adopted" a friend of my brother to live with us, and it almost tore my family apart. he lived with us for 2 and a half years. pure hell.

anyway, it has nothing to do with the country. people complicated everywhere.

My family did England, Scotland, Wales in 10 days in 1982, 2 adults and 5 kids (14 months to 15 years, I was 9) in a Volvo sedan.

Bundaberg is a town about 3 hours south of me - sugar cane country.

Bundy - Bundaberg Rum - mother's milk. It's a dark rum, unlike any other dark rum on the planet. The Bundy Bear is their mascot - why they have a polar bear as their mascot is beyond me, but he is a legend!

I can imagine that discussion will be pleasant ;) I don't know how you cope with that level of heat. I suppose you're used to it, but for it to be that hot that early must still make you want to sit indoors all day. It also made me giggle that you managed to visit not only England, but also 2/3 other parts of the UK in just over a week. We really are a small little country!

Just stumbled across americnxidiot's livejournal (she of Cascade & Cyanide fame) while browsing something completely unrelated. Felt very weird and voyeuristic! I was planning on waiting up for Caged to update but it's nearly 1 here and it's still another 2 hours away. I really like that Savage makes her posting schedule so clear, I don't know many authors who do the same.

Speaking of which, I should log off and go buy the clippers...and the beer that he has just texted that he desperately needs. I have strict instructions to get it on ice!

Chat later  :-*

Our blood is thinner too. It's the cold that gets me, but I love it - you can always pull on another jumper or coat, but there is only so far that you can strip down before you get arrested!

You have no idea how my family used to travel! If Dad had o/s meetings that fell during the school holidays, we'd get to go along and he'd pack as much into each trip as possible - he has ADD.

For that trip, we took another 2 weeks off school, so we were away for 5 weeks in total. We flew Brisbane-Sydney-Bangkok (2 days) - Copenhagen (2 days) - London, collected a campervan, drove to Dover, ferry to Calais, then did Holland, France, Monaco, Italy (went as south as Rome), Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, then back to the UK where we traded the campervan in for the Volvo and B&Bs, then back through Karachi and Manilla, then Sydney then back to Bris. No direct flights in 1982!

How my mother did this with 5 children and kept sane is amazing!

My brother was the best travelled 2 year old in the world. He has been through Europe, UK, US and Asia twice before his third birthday!

I've added Coke to my shopping list - a Bundy or two might be needed tonight before the big haircut!

And after!

Remember those pics of Rob when he was shooting Cosmopolis and had half his head shaved?

Well.. please don't drink too much rum before you cut your brother's hair, for his sake :D

I think it's fascinating to hear where everyone is from, what time it is and different words you all use.

I can't even begin to figure out what time/day you all are on compared to me. All I know is that it's 8:18 on Friday night here :)

When I visited my friend in Austin, I flew out of Ohio to Houston and then into Austin (Houston and Austin are both in TX just in case you weren't familiar). IIRC it was about a 45 min to an hour just between the cities in Texas lol.

To get me from Ohio to Las Vegas took almost 5 hours via flight. Took fooooorrrrrever

It's 01.23 on a Saturday morning here.  I should really be in bed, but, I had a nap earlier so, I'm good.  Thanks for the help with the phone - the address bar was the answer!  I find it incredible that people from so many different time zones are able to communicate - astounding really.  If I took a 5 hour flight I would be in Greece.
