It's hard here.  People are afraid to punish their kids because they'll be accused of abusing them. But some kids just need some kind of discipline in their lives.

And then their are the stupid parents who think their bratty kids can do no wrong.... or they feel guilty because they have to work so much to pay for all the playstations and games and expensive athletic shoes.....

Sigh...I'm sometimes glad I didn't have kids.

Why do you think i broke down during my road trip to Vegas? I so wanted to spank my daughter but i was afraid i'd get arrested. She even threw a literal tantrum in a mall, complete with tears and flopping around on the floor. I soo wanted to scream and spank her but a lot of Americans were looking at us and I just knew i would have a cop come in the minute i lay a finger on her. So my husband and I just sat down on a bench and waited for her to get tired of crying. We figured, none of these people will see us ever again, let them think what they want. Am not fond of spanking but i will do it to make them remember... Probably did it a total of 10 times in her 14 yrs of life... Being a parent is really hard work, now i know what my mother meant by "wait til you become a parent"...

It is the toughest job there is.

(But I hate it when people remind me that I don't really know because I don't have kids)

I think there is a huge difference between a smack/spanking and abuse. Young children do not understand long term consequences and they can't reason - they sometimes need something that is instantaneous.

My mum used to do what we called "the shopping pinch" if we played up in public. She says she always hated seeing women smacking or yelling at their kids in public. She would grab the fleshy part at the top back of our arm and give a little pinch. I think any of the 5 of us would have only had this done once, and we never played up again. If we were being a little unruly she would just say "Come here" and hold her hand up, and we'd fall into line behind her.

I just saw this over on ADF:

Basically, I'm in the middle of writing my dissertation, the topic of which is "Online Communication in YA Fiction Fandoms."

Can people really get tertiary degrees with topics such as this nowadays? And what sort of job would one get with a degree such as this?

I'm feeling a little old today, obviously!

I remember when Princess Di smacked Prince William's bottom when he was misbehaving during parents' day at school.  Caused a big bruhaha, but I though it was fine.  Frankly a smack on the bottom with a bare hand? Yeah, if the kid is wearing jeans? It hurts the parent more than the kid.

Pinches definitely hurt more.  :P

Mount St Helens blew in 1980 I think.  It killed a bunch of geologists that were watching it. But most people in the blast zone were evacuated.  The mudslide did more damage, if I remember correctly. But, they didn't make a movie on it that I know of.

There was a movie - St. Helens.  I don't think anyone in the world saw it.  I only remember it because some station kept advertising it as the late night movie, but I was too little to stay up and watch it.  I'm old.  Do they even have "late night movies" anymore?

I loved the escalator part so much I turned around and asked the hubby why he never does anything romantic like that and his reponse was "Well, if you went away I might, but we're married now so I don't have to worry about all that cr*p!" - nice.  >:( :D
We've only been married for 12 weeks and he thinks like that all ready, mind you we've been together for 6 years so that might explain some of it.  :D

I've just started the 3rd fic in the Gravity series You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login.
I'm so glad that I didn't read these as WIPs as I might of gone (more) insane with the wait in between the updates.  :D
Absolutely loving this series.

Her degree is in Publishing with a minor in English - I'd say that Fanfiction is actually a great topic to do her project on as it's such a big issue in publishing currently. Very current, lots of debate etc.

Comp Sem was great.  I really loved the last outtake when he was helping her in the golf tournament.  So sweet when the baby moving ruins the shot & they are so excited she can't hit the ball ;)  I really wanted her to win  :P

I'm reading Broken Angel now...there sure are a lot of lemons in this thing.  I really didn't have a problem with how fast she took him back only because just before he showed up she was thinking he was the only one who could make her whole again.  It's that whole mating thing.  But she's twenty now & I'm thinking "you better change her soon or you won't be able to look the same age when you play high school kids"   ???  I worry about weird things.

Where is home for you?

Flying between the US and Europe seems to be a much shorter trip than Australia to US or Europe. How long does it take? I realise it depends which coast of the US you fly to.

I am flying from Vienna and it takes 8 hours to US East coast and 11 hours to the West coast. Flying to Australia takes more than 24 hours, as you need 2 stop overs. Of course there is also a price difference, you can buy a ticket to N.Y. for 500 EUR, to Sydney for 900 - 1000 EUR....

The writing is good but for me the storyline was anti-climatic, a lot of build up and then a few rushed end chapters. There wasn't really a conclusive ending either. I'd say try the first few chapters and see what you think. Edward is cocky and orders Bella around a lot, I know some people don't like that in fics.

You're married to Charlie??  :D

Am lucky my husband also likes to travel. Took us 5yrs after getting married to have our first child. So while we didn't have kids yet, we saved up for our once a year trip abroad. At our age now, our mindset is "let's travel while we still enjoy it, can still walk around, ride the roller coasters and keep up with our kids". The past few years we've enjoyed travelling more since the kids were older (now 14 and 9) so we didn't have to constantly run after them.

My worst was in 2001, my first trip to the US, with a 2.5 yr old daughter who refuses to stay in the car seat. You see, we are not mandated to have car seats here so she never wore a seatbelt before arriving in the US. It was a major production every time we went out and had to strap her in. On a drive from LA to vegas, i broke down and cried bec she was getting on my nerves and i was afraid the police will arrest us bec she kept throwing tantrums and getting out of the car seat. Thankfully my kids age now is ideal for travelling.

There are 3 seasons here: sunny, rainy and typhoon season. It's not a problem to dry wet clothes in our backyard. It is during the rainy and typhoon season, that it is a problem to dry our clothes since i don't own a dryer. We use the electric fans at night to dry my kids school uniforms if they didn't dry during the day.  ;D

"You're married to Charlie" best line of the night. Sorry but that was really funny

I agree. If you do try the first few chapters you will want to read more. I'd say the first 12 were the best, kept you interested.
There is this huge build up that kinda fizzled out at the end.

I read it ... It was good then it ended so abruptly. I actually thought it was incomplete, I honestly don't know how it ended, I think it needs a couple of chapters to be complete... ::)

The story was not bad, but the end was a little rushed and confusing. The author mentioned there might be a sequel in the future, no idea if I would read that... :D

I am so dull! I have 2 degrees in Education and never got to do write anything interesting! The most exciting thing I wrote when I was at uni was about gender stereotypes in children's stories. My lecturer was the most narrow minded, sexist arsehole you could come across - he only turned up to half the lectures - so I wrote the most narrow minded, sexist BS you could imagine - and got an A!

That actually really annoys me about fics - you shouldn't use the possibility of a sequel to excuse a rushed finish. A sequel is a continuation of a story, not an ending.

My degree in Economics could only be duller...now i only get to write annual report write ups, presentations and memos  ;D  so i will always have great respect for good authors...anyone that evokes twinging hearts, tears and perpetual smiles (not necessarily all in one work) while am reading are heroes to me.  :)

Am now reading knicnort3's Lies of the soul, am on page 75 of 350, ok so far though a bit confusing at the start...
