Question for everyone here...

What kind of tablet do you guys have? Do you love it or was it just an ok buy?

My hubby won a Best Buy gift card through a work contest and we're thinking of getting one but I like to have people's thoughts/opinions on stuff like this.

Thank you  :-*

Like demaris, i love my Ipad. i call it my "precious", yes, in that creepy voice. I bring it with me everywhere. I also use it for work to take down notes or do presentations.

If you will be using the tablet purely for reading and not much gaming, suggest you buy the mini-ipad. its so much lighter. Otherwise, i suggest you get the new ipad4.

I am not sure of the performance of the ipad4 which they just released. its supposed to have a faster ios. I would buy the latest one though if cost is not an issue. My regret in buying the ipad3 is that it appears to discharge faster than my ipad2. I guess it is because of the retina display which is supposed to give better resolution. Bought the ipad3 mid december, before the ipad4 came out here as it was slightly cheaper already. Since i really just read, surf the internet and do some word/excel/ppt stuff, i didn't need the faster Ios. It is extremely easy to download and save fanfics to ibooks. I also installed the kindle app so the .mobi ones i download can be read in my ipad too.

Don't buy the nook color! My sister bought that last year and its driving me crazy! She is very low tech and my cousin jailbroke it so it can do more stuff. I am the one that fixes it for her and loads her ebooks. After using apple, i hated android! Or maybe i am just so used to apple, itunes and their app store but i feel it is really much more user friendly.  :)

I have had several laptops over the years and still have one. I had an older kindle that hubs has procured since he travels the world. Hubs and I both have iPads and I love that it syncs with my iphone. We started looking around Xmas for hubs. He doesn't wanna take his iPad all over the world, but he wanted something smaller about the size of the kindle. We looked at kindle fire, nook tablet, nexus, really everything that Best Buy carried and so far our fav is the iPad mini but we haven't bought it yet. Every night when I come home, it is the iPad I grab and not my laptop.

Both my sons have iPads as well and that is what they take around college, not their laptops.

Thank you for the input! I really appreciate that, and now the mini is an option.

I've never used any apple products....been a PC and Android girl from the get-go.

So both epubs and mobi can potentially be read on the ipads? Are there a lot of free apps on the apple system?

I would be using this for web surfing and reading, not a gamer :)

I have none of these. I have my laptop and I'm good. I refuse to give any of my money to Apple and I love my BB. I'm never switching to the darkside.

Do you all download straight to your tablets or do most of your library maintenance on your laptops?

I've never used an Apple product myself. When I got an MP3 player, I got a frickin Zune!, Now they've discontinued those and I don't know what to get for a new one, my Zune is about shot.

All my books are downloaded to my laptop and into calibre. I have two libraries- one for fic, one for real books. The real book library gets uploaded to Dropbox, the fics get uploaded to Google Drive.

There ARE fic reader apps I've found, but it's easier for me to do it the way I do it, I couldn't get the hang of the couple of fic downloaders I tried.

Oh holy shit. I have a zune as well.

And THEY DISCONTINUED THE GODDAMN SOFTWARE UPDATES.

This pisses me off to no end.

And the fact that I had a zune pass. There was NO way to cancel the subscription. No phone number, impossible to cancel online. Old phone numbers are out of service. There are all kinds of complaints online about it, people still being charged after attempting to cancel.

I had to cancel my gdamn credit card to get out of it. a$$holes.

And like you, I need a new mp3 player because mine is shit. Sucks because I have several sets of the Kicker speakers that were made just for zune. Fabulous.

Yes iBooks handles ePub and PDFs just fine. I had to download kindle app to read mobi.  Very very easy to download books, etc. iBooks remembers where you are to, so you never have to bookmark it. You can even open one book, close it, open another and read and then go back. It will always remember where you are with each book.

Savana I was like you. Apple, no way. But then the boys talked me into an iPhone and I love it. Then they got an iPad and I said I didn't need one because I have my laptop. Well 6 months later hubs and I were buying his and hers.

There are many more apps for apple products than android based, but the androids are growing all the time.

Heheh we all had zunes  too. Although we don't own and iPod, it is not necessary. With an iPhone we have our music. Plus since everything syncs with iTunes, then we can load our music on the iPad too.

Absolutely yes. Download the free apps: ibooks for your epub and pdf, then the kindle app for the mobi.
The app store has a lot of free apps. The ibook store also has some free books.

Straight to my ipad. Then i sync once a week so i can copy the stuff in my ipad to my PC. When i download an attachment in pts i press on it for a few seconds so it will show "open in new tab" etc. i press open in new tab and it will download there. It will show a button on the upper right to "open in ibooks", i press that and it goes to ibooks and file is automatically saved.
When you download from fanfic, i copy the URL, open a new tab for flag, paste the URL, select format and press download. Once its downloaded, it will also show a button at the top that says "open in ibooks". when you click that it goes to ibooks and the file is automatically saved in ibooks. Same happens if its in .mobi

It's so very easy to use. My sister is just waiting for the mini-ipad  (stocks ran out on the day it was released here) and she will buy one already. I can't wait cause it will make MY life so much easier. even an "idiot" like her will have an easy time downloading and reading books.  :P

My 9yr old son and 14yr old daughter each inherited my old ipad2s. My son kept bugging me to use my ipad so i decided to buy myself a new one last december and the older versions were passed down to each of them. I hate sharing my "precious", specially when i am reading and right in the middle of a good lemon!!  ;D

My maintenance is still done via laptop just so I have it. when I plug in the iPad to the laptop, I can load books, music, files, etc. plus there are apps for Dropbox too. If you don't want the app, then you can just signin via the browser way.

Mine's a first gen, I really need something less frickin bulky. But it does still work ok. I haven't checked the software in a long time. I would be pissed if I was stuck with a zune pass I couldn't cancel, I just added money when I needed to.

I do like the looks of the new ipod touch, but they're so gdamn expensive!

I really don't see the need for an iPod touch. It is just like an iPhone without the phone and browsing capabilities. Just get the iPhone, it works just fine as an mp3 player. In fact, my iPhone syncs with my car and I can play the music on my phone in the car. I can even use the phone through my car.  Gonna spend that kind of money, get something that has many purposes.

Booked I think you and I were separated at birth, I call it my "precious" a al Gollum too. And NO one touches it! I have been using Apple all my computing life, and whenever I go next to a PC I break out in hives..I had a BB at one point but the moment the iPhone came out it was game over. I will say though that my BB did function better as a "work" phone, but the iPhone (i'm on my 4th one)now controls my whole life. Which I'm sure is exactly what Mr Job had in mind  :D :D :D.  When Job died I walked into a design office and on a massive floor to ceiling white board they had written "Dear God, Please can we have back Steve Job? Take Bill Gates instead"  Which I laughed at, at the time, though really it's, rather horrid....

Thank you! Your post was very helpful :)

And I do not share my gadgets with my kiddos. They don't even ask anymore lol. They have their own toys, mine are too expensive to be played with (my kids are 6 and 4). My mom lets them play on her Kindle Fire all the time and they do well with it but....yea. I'm just selfish and don't share, not even with the hubs. Mine.

Another added bonus of an iPad. You can instant message anyone, just like a txt but it is free. Want to see and talk to them- use FaceTime. It is like Skype, without having to load the software or the app. FaceTime also works on the iPhone. The only downside is FaceTime only works with other apple users.

Hum, just a thought. Can you group chat in FaceTime? I see all of us getting together and chatting! I think we would all be talking a mile a minute.
