Ok folks, list em here. Fics that you have flounced, and why you flounced them. Help keep others apprised of the good, the bad, and the badly edited. :-*

Ok here's why:

B & E meet on a train one night. Apparently she's so heart broken after Jacob. E over hears that B is going to LA the next day so he introduces himself and what a coincidence he is also going to LA the following day!! So anyway they're on the same flight and just happen to sit next to each other - what a coincidence! After landing in LA they go out that day and spend the night in each others arms. I dont think they had sex though (i was skimming - sue me) Ok try to follow this cause its good! The following day she meets his autistic daughter Bree who he fathered with Jane his ex who is now a lesbian who is planning her wedding to Tanya. Yep! He wants to take his daughter to Disney world the next day and asks B to come but she already had plans to go to Disneyworld with Alice - what a coincidence! I couldn't continue after that! Alice calls B about a party that night and I just know that E was going to be there - coincidence? Ughhh.

Apparently B sleeps with E and J around the same time and ends up pregnant with twins and she doesn't know who the daddy is. I think I dodged a bullet.

I started to read this one.  I don't remember anything about her parents being there or not. But I quit reading because she was not updating regularly. So I forgot I was reading it....  Sad I know.... :P

It's awful.
Don't waste your time. I jumped many chapters to see how it ends.
There is no progressions. No plot.

I've read so many fics that I just cannot remember all the ones I hated.  Lol.  I wish I had found this thread sooner!  My absolute biggest pet peeve is when the author says "for all intensive purposes" when they are trying to say  "for all intents and purposes".  I pretty much have to stop reading the fic at that point.  I mean, really?  Do you even understand what you are trying to convey?  Intensive purposes?  That makes no sense at all.  Drives me crazy!

I can't stand when the author is trying to say definitely and instead types defiantly. Or when they use you're instead of your. Another pet peeve is when an author doesn't have a character use contractions in dialogue. It's just weird. Most people don't go around saying cannot or do not when they are speaking (especially younger characters).  I also can't stand when an older author (I assume the author is older) has a character use outdated slang when they are trying to write dialogue for a young character in present time. It's 2013, not 1993 or 1983. I don't want to read slang that Vanilla Ice would have said when he was young or hear that something is "the bomb".

They didn't use a lot of contractions back in the early 1900's, so unless it is a period fic, I would totally agree with you.

I was just waiting for the next tragedy. I bet she will lose her ability to have kids, then she will go blind, then she and her family will go bankrupt, her parents will die, zombies will appear and the world will end.

But, if you want an overload of angst go for it.

This is another fic that I should've flounced but didnt. The story started off really great. Renee gives up all rights and sends Bella home to Charlie, even though he doesn't know her name or where she's been for the last 15 years. Bella is shy, malnutrioned and we come to learn that Renee has been physically and psychologically abusing her her whole life. So far, so good.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Honestly, the story could have finished there. The rest is therapy. B & E fall in love. Yada, yada. The author then decides to add more "angst". Honestly by this stage I'm skimming whole pages and not missing out on sh!t. Homecoming, prom, Bella's secret grandpa, Tanya being a psychotic b!tch.

Anyhoo, this is one fic I seriously wish I had flounced. I hate myself for wasting precious reading hours.

I'm sorry but I flounced Butterfly Betty's FBI series (Here We Go Again, Flightless Bird & Broken Roads).  Bella character is so OC & unbelievable, especially as a supposedly crack FBI agent.  She's so unstable she'd never make it in the FBI.  Edward is just there for looks -- he hardly does anything.  It's just an unbelievable situation.  How it got dragged out to 3 stories is beyond me.

I think it would've been an alright fic if it wasn't so unbelievable.
I mean Bella lets Edward look after her daughter Katie even though she doesn't know Edward as nothing more than as someone who's been coming into the diner she works at for a year but not really talked to.
What is even worse that Charlie lets Edward take Katie after only meeting him 10 minutes before!!
Within hours of Edward looking after Katie, she is calling Edwards siblings Auntie and Uncle and all of this is all by chapter 3!!!

LOL! It wasn't me but sorry about that.  We probably shouldn't allow authors or translators to see this thread - the whole point of complaining here is not to write flaming reviews on FFnet.  Because really, we appreciate anyone who writes or translates stories.  But sometimes you just need to vent.

And I have found some great stories to read on this thread - mostly because I like things that others don't like.  If that makes any sense.  And I'm probably not the only one.

But I am really sorry you felt attacked by someone's review.  And I'm glad you let us know it wasn't your writing.  :-*

I don't know if this is a reply to Ellaenchanted but here goes nothing: I'm an author and a translator, so yes I feel hurt if someone writes that she can't stand any of my writing. My stories are very diverse, both the original ones and the translations, so to say that she can't stand any of them, that's quite a huge thing to say...

Well, you do have to understand that your writing will not appeal to everyone.  Now if a number of readers say the same thing, then you have a problem.  But one reader? You just can't let it bother you.  There will always be reviewers that won't like your writing style.  My husband reads books I find incredibly boring.  But he loves them.  He is not interested in most of the stuff I read.  He thinks the stories are kind of stupid.  We have some books we both like.  It doesn't necessarily mean that an author is a bad writer just because one person doesn't like it.

Also, if you are translating, I'm thinking some rewriting would need to be done to have a story make sense.  My limited knowledge of French would lead me to believe if you translated it without some rewriting? It would be very awkward sounding in English. Especially the dialogue.  So if the reader didn't understand it was a translation, they may not understand why it was strange sounding.  But that is my opinion and probably means nothing....  ;D

I totally agree with you and yes, it was just that one person who wrote bad things about my stories, but once again I just don't understand how she could state something like this as my stories are all different since they are not by the same author and I do reformulate them in English so they don't look like translations (and most of my readers actually praise my writing, so...). Plus I do have a beta reader who edits my chapters, an English speaker, obviously, and she would tell me if my writing made no sense in English. As for Collisions (which is the most popular story over the French fandom), I would like to improve the text in English, but the author doesn't allow me to change one thing. She even made me write that Starbucks Coffee was selling pancakes!
But I'm first and foremost a French translator, and once again, people who read my stuff can not tell that I'm only translating (I stopped writing my original stories 2 years ago when my mom got sick and I lost the motivation and focus necessary to write - translating doesn't involve the same part of my brain ;D)

LOL! They will sound strange if the writers don't let you change things that make no sense.  Which was what I was trying to say.  Though maybe Starbucks in France sell crepes.  They are a type of pancake, right?  But it is something that is out of your control.  And maybe the reviewer didn't understand they were translations and not yours.  Frankly, if they don't know it is just a translation, you would look like a very strange writer - no real style at all.  Because really? None of it is your style.   ;D

She probably didn't realize it when she said it.  And it's likely she's never actually read any of your real stories.  Which is sad.  :(

I could talk about translating for hours... The thing you need to know about it is that, although you need to change the way the sentences are formulated from French to English, or from English to French, you need to stay true to the author's style. Because ultimately it is not your writing, it is someone else's and it needs to show in the translation. I'm sure you have already read a book that was not originally written in English, but could you tell? (Think of Madame Bovary, maybe...). I am (or was) Sebastien Robichaud (aka Sylvain Reynard) French translator on FF, and believe me, the French version of The Ice Queen and Mister McCarty does perfectly reflect the original version. ;D
