Ok folks, list em here. Fics that you have flounced, and why you flounced them. Help keep others apprised of the good, the bad, and the badly edited. :-*

I forgot to tell you, I don't think they have Starbucks Coffee in France  8)
My favorite thing? When non-American writers call potato chips crisps.  I know from reading British stories that crisps are what we call chips and chips are what we call french fries.  Little things like this can really upset some people and others just brush it off.  It's the problem with writing about places you've never been I guess.  ;D

Yeah, people from other countries write stories taking place in the United States but sometimes they don't know the first thing about our way of life ^^
I stopped reading stories in French (except for a handful of them) because I was tired sick of reading about little kids attending kindergarten at 3 and people buying antibiotics over the counter at the pharmacy ^^
Then again I'm a very picky reader   :-\

That is it totally.  Sometimes it is so annoying.  Other times, I just ignore it.  I guess it depends on how much I like Edward.  Really.  That is usually what it comes down to.  I put up with a lot of bad writing if I like the Edward.   :D :D :D

But I usually tell writers they should move Bella and Edward to their country.  They can really be anywhere.  And then I don't mind that they write stuff that works where they live and not here.  ;)

Ha ha, exactly. I have a friend who writes her stories like they are taking place in France except they are not. I told her how things are this side of the Atlantic and she told me "yes, but here it's like this and like that." I wanted to tell her "Well if you want it like this why don't you have your characters live in France." The thing is, most of her readers are French people and they don't know better so they don't mind, but I do because I'm French Canadian and I don't like to read stories that don't reflect the reality of the country where they are taking place. ;D

I would MUCH rather read about Edward and Bella in London than read about Forks/Seattle Edward wearing a cashmere jumper, because it makes me think of those dresses little girls wear. In America, make it a sweater, lol!

I don't expect authors from other countries to tailor everything for American readers, I just wish they'd either set it here and use our terms, or set it there and use theirs.

Yeah, I totally agree  :)  The vocabulary is not exactly the same in the US and in the United Kingdom. The vocabulary is a little different too in Quebec province and in France, but the French people (not all of them of course) are so self-centered when it comes to the French language that they think that if we don't use the same word to speak about the same thing we are making a mistake just because they have not heard of it before. Their way, or the highway...

And what the heck is a lorry doing in Forks?  We have trucks and semis.

My mother is technically French Canadian from Manitoba, but her French dad died when she was young so she is more like her British mum.  So I don't really get the Quebecois' need to be so "French", especially if, as you say, the language is not quite the same.  But I do wish we were more multi-lingual here in the states.

Well, technically we speak the same language, just the same way Americans and British and Australians speak the same language, but sometimes French people "snob" us because of the nuances in our way of speaking it. I mean there are the same differences between the French we speak in Quebec and the French they speak in France as the differences between American English and British English. It's still French, not a foreign dialect...

I remember when I took French in school and they were talking about how Franglais is making its way into the language and how some of the sticklers were not happy.  Though that was years and years ago...

I think it is the same with the Spanish in Mexico and the Spanish in Spain.  Too much space between and life is different.  You end up with different words for things that happen after you split, I guess.

Yes, same thing with the Spanish from Spain and from Mexico (and other South America countries), Portuguese from Portugal and from Brazil...

The French (at least in Paris) do look down on the Canadian French, but I discovered it's better than speaking French with an American accent! Even though I was mostly fluent from my American schooling, when I went to Paris with my Quebecoise mother, we had better results when she spoke than when I did. It wasn't as bad outside Paris but definitely an eye opener. Although, I will say that I often had trouble understanding my family when I would visit Sherbrooke--especially if drinks were involved! Once the dialect comes into play, I would get completely lost! So, I can't imagine how difficult it would be in translating fanfics.

Don't take it personally Parisians look down on everyone.

Ha ha, yes, it's rather funny (weird) when you speak the same language and they still repeat after you as if you didn't pronounce it correctly just because I have the French Canadian accent ^^
But when it comes to translating, you just need to use an international French, one with no regionalism whether it be from France or from Quebec, so everyone will be on the same page.

It's my week for coming across terrible fics.  I have just read a bit of Isabella Swan: Submissive by kitties1ffn.  This Bella must have at least a dozen inner voices, all of which are nuts and her Dom Edward, is part hysterical.    -

"Wrapping his arms around my upper body, he squeezes me to the point of pain. He clings to me so desperately, that I can scarcely breathe. When he grabs handfuls of my hair and yanks my head back, I wince as he swirls his tongue inside my mouth.

“OUCH!” Stalker harpy hisses out, “That bitch is gonna hurt!”

“What do you mean ‘gonna?” I ask. “It ‘does’ bloody well hurt! How the hell am I going to get these tangles out?”

Yep, my harpies are in extra perceptive mode today, or so it would seem. Glowering at me, she sticks her middle finger up at me and stomps off inside of the tent, zipping it up behind her."

Well this is really ... ahem ... interesting  :D

...but honestly, how many arms does this Edward have? Or are they freakishly long? Squeezing her to a point that it's painful and pulling her hair at the same time? And when does she have time for so many inner voices in that situation?

... strange ...

Same here, adding that to my mental do NOT read file. Not that I would have anyway, I don't love the BDSM style stories anyway. Fifty/MotU was about as far as it goes for me.

I was barely able to finish MotU. Of course the fact that SQID was not happy about one of my comments (telling her that Bella didn't have time to really know Edward after only 6 or 7 weeks of just NOT ALLOWED like rabbits) and suggested me to stop reading her story didn't help me be particularly fond of it... I just wonder why she asked her readers to tell her what they thought of the chapters if she was not ready for something less than positively marveling at her work...

It's just difficult for me to think about MotU without a bitter-sweet taste because it just reminds me of my friend Just4ALE who passed away almost a year ago...
